Pop star mom Gwen Stefani told Elle magazine that her 7-month-old son lives up to the name she gave him. "Total Rasta boy," she said. "Kingston is so chill. He gives me real balance. You could go 100 miles an hour, but you still have to stop and hang out with him."
Kingston is named for the capitol city of Jamaica, the city whose culture has most strongly influenced Gwen's musical tastes (remember when No Doubt was a ska band, and Gwen performed in a cheerleader's uniform? No? Then you didn't grow up in SoCal in the late 80's.)
Is it a classic case of boy fitting name, or name fitting boy? And would a Kingston by any other name be as chill?
My husband and I gave both our girls botanical names and (is it just us?) each girl's name suits her personality perfectly. Violet, 19 months, is fair and petite, with a vibrant, but mellow personality - tell me, is that not the perfect description of an actual violet? And Hazel, 4, has a golden hue to her, with a disposition that is both spiky and sweet - there is more to her than meets the eye, much like the flowering witch hazel. I know a little girl named Stella who is just that - a shining star; I know a little boy named Fox who is as mischievous and adorable as you'd think; I know a newborn named Berlin who is... well, the jury's still out on that one (cool name though, don't you think?).
