She's obnoxious public persona, an inflated sense of self-importance and she's exists purely to shop and party. She's like our generation's Charo - but rich. In other words, Paris Hilton is exactly what I don't want my daughters to be like when they grow up. Oh, also? She's about to be a jailbird!
Parents Rick and Kathy Hilton looked "stunned" when their daughter was sentenced to 45 days in an L.A. County jail for
violating the conditions of her parole for repeatedly driving with a
suspended license. According to reports, Paris stood before the judge pre-sentencing, and told the court, "I respect the law. ... I want you to know I'm very sorry and will pay complete attention to everything from now on." Mom Kathy was overheard saying "I can't believe how much money we spent on this [trial]!"
Prosecutors said Paris "knowingly" drove with a suspended licence, and pushed hard for a jail sentence; Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer agreed with the prosecution, and said he felt Paris "disregarded everything ... and didn't care and kept driving." Paris' defense team called the sentence "uncalled for, inappropriate and
ludicrous. [Paris] has been selectively
targeted. We plan to appeal. Shame
on the system."
Obviously, this sentence will serve as an example of "what not to do" for young kids in Hollywood, and those who watch them, and as a major comeuppance for Paris. In all likelihood, due to overcrowding of L.A. jails and the lack of severity of her crime, Paris will serve less than a day in jail, perhaps even just a few hours, but meaning behind the message is still clear: obey the law, no matter who you are, or you will be held accountable.
Parents of teens and tweens: will you use Paris Hilton's recent legal troubles as an example of what not to do for your kids?
