Thought your baby was safe from melamine-tainted formual because he or she isn't in China? Think again!!
Yes,
tests by the Food and Drug Administration revealed that formula made
by the three biggest formula manufacturers – Abbot Labs, makers of
Similac, Mead Johnson, makers of Enfamil, and Nestle, makers of Good
Start – has either trace levels of melamine or a chemical by-product of
melamine. Together, these formulas make up 90 percent of all formula
sold in the US.
Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant
formula that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and
making at least 50,000 others ill. Of course, the melamine in the
Chinese formula was intentionally added to make it look like it had
higher protein than it actually did. At the small amounts found in the
American formula, the nutritional profile would not be affected. The
tainted Chinese formula also had melamine added in much, much higher
concentrations than that found in the American formula.
