• 7 Things You'll Find in the Nursery of the Future

  A few weeks ago, Babble went to the future. And you were there! And you! Okay, no, you weren't there, but Ty Pennington was, as he is the official childless spokesperson of the (admittedly really handy) new Similac Simplepac. What else did we see in the Nursery of the Future? 1. Lots of formula. Because in the future, universal health care will cover breast augmentation, leaving all women unable to nurse. And also because The Nursery of the Future is sponsored by Similac. 2. Ty Pennington. In the future, Ty Pennington will come standard with all nursery furniture. • Decorating the Nursery for You...I Mean, the Baby

  I am not a fan of most of the nursery decorations that fill up Babies R Us and other places where jungle, princess and a bear riding in a hot air balloon themes abound. That is why I totally ripped off the design of the baby's room my friend Maggie designed for her first-born. When I visited her and her newborn, I remember feeling calm and happy in the nursery and so I ran with that, choosing the same style of crib and color of paint when I was pregnant for my son. No lamps that match the bumper that match the mobile that inspire the rug that coordinate with the diaper caddy. Just sweet colors and good feelings. These good feelings have also inspired many other couples preparing for the birth of their children and not wanting to go the traditional nursery-in-a-bag decorating route. This, I get. These parents-to-be want to evoke some bigger wish or message for their babes, something revealing about the family they've been born into, something to create the first inklings of hope and creativity and calm, something to inspire them as they grow (or at least once they can see beyond their own little hands). This, I also get. These parents with an eye for detail want symbols and modern furniture and a place they feel is a haven for their infant who is awake every night from 1 am to dawn. Again, totally understandable. What I don't get is why all of this needs to have a price tag of up to $15,000? I'm all for investing in great baby gear, especially sturdy and shapely cribs and sumptuous gliders and yummy sheets. But does a room that will soon house piles of talking plastic toys and cardboard tubes and Dora stickers forever adhesed to the satin-coated low-VOC painted walls need that much of an investment? Just in case the answer is a whole-hearted, curb appealing "yes!," then shouldn't the well-intentioned parents just admit that the decorating endeavor is really for themselves, even if it is in the name of the barely-born baby? • Digi Photo Wallpaper Makes a Kid's Room Really His Own

  This week, Lil E peered up at me while we were reading pre-naptime books, blooped out his paci and said very seriously, "Mommy, I want to sleep in a big boy bed." I've been wondering recently if it is that time or if there is any possible way my child will sleep in his crib through kindergarten. But just like weaning and restricting the use of that golden pacifier and even slow steps toward potty training, Lil E tells me when he is ready. We've agreed to wait until he is three and he is good with getting a big boy bed as a birthday present. But now my mind is spinning with how we will transition his room from nursery to kiddie without making it too big boy or too little baby. God help us, the changing table will go out with the crib and then we will free up two walls for our own personal extreme toddler room make-over. Although I still have several months before all this transition takes place, I know one decorating tip we will be incorporating for sure: The bad-ass digital photo wallpaper like the kind Dave at Geekdad just had installed in his kid's room. I love that it is bold, unique and with a little bit of tech-play and cash-investment, creates a room for you kid that is really about the kid. No more eye-rolling at the standard "boy-theme" deco available at Target and Pottery Barn Kids and other gender-generic places. I'm thinking about a gigantic golf scene with Tiger, Ernie and Annika, scaled to wall-size for my boy. Or maybe an American Idol stage (oh wait, maybe that's more for me). Just imagining it has me just as ready as Lil E to pack up the crib and diapers and slap up some very cool custom wallpaper. • P'kolino Clothes Tree is Functional and Fun

  The jackets and sweaters and dress-up clothes and butterfly wings and belts and necklaces and (now that we're in swimming season) the goggles and bathrobes. These are things I pick up off the floor of my daughter's room daily. And every day I mutter, "I really need to get some hooks up in this piece." When I saw the whimsical P'Kolino (a play on the Italian word for "little one," piccolino) clothes tree ($94.85), I thought, "Perfect!" At four feet high it's just the right size for kids to hang things themselves, and there are plenty of low-hanging branches. The colors are fresh and modern. Best of all, though, is that the tree can literally be a "tree" or whatever your children want it to be when they are playing. Though in my house, I'm sure it would always be "that thing that holds all the stuff." • Apartment Therapy: Nursery Edition

  I'm pretty pleased to share this news: one of my favorite flavors of site candy just got hip to the parenting thang. Welcome to Apartment Therapy: The Nursery. I've been loving Apartment Therapy from afar for a while now--even though I technically live in a house, it's about half of the size of our previous (and pre-kid) flat. We're, shall we say, very cozy over here. Apartment Therapy's focus on small-scale space is right up my alley, and AT: The Nursery follows that same aesthetic. I look forward to gleaning innovative ideas to keep the toys and tutus at bay when space is at a premium.
