  • Make That a Single Cappuccino: Study Links Caffeine and Miscarriage

coffee pregnantGet ready for some flack from your barrista, pregnant ladies. A new study reported in the New York Times connects drinking 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day (200 milligrams is about 10 ounces of coffee or 25 ounces of tea) to a greater risk of miscarriage. The lead author of the study, Dr. De-Kun Li, says pregnant women should consider going decaf or at least cutting back to a cup for the first few months of being knocked up. The study consisted of interviews with 1,063 pregnant women about caffeine use, but by the time of the study, 102 had already miscarried. Later, 70 more miscarried, for a rate of 16 percent of the group, pretty typical for the population. The researchers found that "the miscarriage rate was 24.5 percent in the 164 women who consumed 200 milligrams or more per day. The increased risk was associated with caffeine itself and not with other known risk factors like the mother’s age or smoking habits."

Is there any hope for the latte-loving mamas of the world?

  • Don't Get All Guilty About Eating Crap

fellate-a-burgerYou'd think I'd be totally into an article on why you shouldn't feel bad about "diet flubs," but apparently I'm so crabby I can find fault with anything right now. Basically the gist is that nobody eats perfectly all the time, and that you may not be as bad as you think. So if you lament that you eat empty carbs, you can chillax because only half your grain servings need to be whole grain; if you love red meat, just keep it to lean cuts three times a week; if you only like carrots as a veggie, don't stress because you'll probably get sick of them; and if you don't read nutrition labels, great cuz you aren't being suckered by healthy, sugar-free claims, just keep an eye out for hydrogenated oils. Fine.

So why am I still somewhat hissy? Well...

  • Hey Kids! Read the Damn Food Labels Already!

nutrition labelYou know those nutrition labels on food? That have appeared on everything and they're standardized now which was supposed to make them easier to understand? Yeah. Those. Do you read them? I actually don't, knowing that almost anything that comes in a bag or a box also is chock-full of stuff I probably don't want to know I'm eating, stuff that if consumed in large enough quantities will be sufficient to preserve my dead body without the need for embalming. Or that will kill me. Or both!

So you ignore the labels. But what about your kids? I think as parents we pretty much know when something's generally healthy or not, but until I read this I never thought of teaching this stuff to my kids.
