It never even occurred to me when I was signing my organ donor paperwork that one of my body parts that might come in handy was my uterus.
I mean, if I die in a tragic car accident or am rendered brain dead (as my living will specifies) you are all welcome to it. It is slightly used, but it can handle two babies at the same time, so some lucky woman should have no trouble making one baby with it.
Let's not get too excited about this yet. So far doctors have been able to successfully remove uteri without complications, but "thus far, the only human uterine transplant that has been
performed was 'controversial and unsuccessful.' "
I think it is a very interesting idea. I don't know if this will upset or please the religious right. It really isn't that different from a kidney transplant (which I assume the Pope is okay with) but it could definitely mess with God's plan. If birth control is a problem how would the church feel about this? I don't know. I'm no Godologist, nor am I a doctor, nor do I play one on tv, but I think it seems like a pretty cool idea if they can get it to work.
(Yes, that is a picture of the inside of my uterus. The boy is pictured on the top. Consider it advertising for my organ donor skills. Get in line ladies.)
