• Texas CPS head resigns

  Interesting little twist in the FLDS/Texas CPS case: Carey Cockerell, the head of the agency, announced that he is retiring. The interesting part is that the press release announcing the news makes no mention of the now-infamous seizing of 400+ children from the Polygamy Compound a few months ago, which is the only reason that most news outlets would pick up this story. • Polygamists as Victims

  Are the members of the FLDS victims of religious persecution? That's what some people from the polygamy-practicing sect are saying. A Texas court is holding hearings to determine what will happen to the children who were removed from the ranch last month, and with "463 children, 168 mothers and 69 fathers", that's going to take awhile. FLDS spokespeople are playing the victim card, crying religious persecution. One of the "elders" of the sect wrote a letter to President Bush calling the ranch raid a "terrorist act." Read More... • Update: Praying Parents Charged With Homicide

  The Wisconsin couple whose 11-year-old daughter died of treatable diabetes after said parents eschewed medical attention for prayer were charged Monday with second-degree reckless homicide. The father has stated he thought his daughter's illness was a “test of faith”, and I have no doubt he and his wife prayed until they could pray no more, but I wonder that now they have failed this “test” where their faith stands. • Polyamory: A Solution to the Child Care Crisis?

  Miriam Axel Lute’s personal essay about being a third of a triple is certainly going to cause a collective sharp sucking in of breath. I’ll admit to an instantaneous ‘Whaaaat?’ when I started reading And Baby Makes Four, Axel Lute’s story of bringing a baby into a marriage of two women and one man. Waiting for an explanation to make me more comfortable (oh, the lesbian couple had to marry a man in order to legally inseminate in whatever backwoods state they live in) never did arrive when Axel Lute explains very efficiently that all decisions were a matter of personal choice.   Polyamorous relationships differ from polygamy in that the latter is most commonly associated with the now defunct (and reviled) practice in the Mormon Church. That particular ‘belief’ has always made my blood boil mostly because it is a one way street where men are the deciders and pedophilia was not always out of the question. Read More...
