• Morning News: Jimmy Carter, Giddy

  Jimmy Carter looked old but adorably giddy to be in Barack Obama's presence yesterday, when all the living presidents and the president-elect met at the White House for a photo op. We think Barack Obama looks indulgent of the old white guys and Dubya looks confused "Is this about me?  It is, right?" Bill Clinton seems to be wondering when the refreshments will be served and George Sr. just wants to get back the bridge game he left hanging in Kennebunkport. Love him or...don't love him, you've only got twelve more days to laugh at the sitting president (let's face it, Obama just isn't that funny).  And who doesn't need a laugh in these grim times?  A Guardian columnist rounds up some of the best Bushisms of the past eight years and you can LOL while you browse them online.  Warning: put the coffee down. • Having Another Baby After a Traumatic Birth

  While I would normally be wary of offering news about a celebrity who didn’t know who either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama was, I’m making an exception in this case: the singer and TV star Suzanne Shaw has said that she is terrified of having another baby since the birth of her son was so difficult. I was interested to learn about this soon after writing about a study that found that nearly one-tenth of women suffer from post traumatic stress disorder after giving birth. Read More... • Does Childbirth Cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

  “I call childbirth my very own Vietnam. You weren’t there, maaaan.” So writes a playful Jezebel reader. But the study that she’s responding to is no joke: the Wall Street Journal reports that 9 percent of women suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) caused by childbirth. While I am all for airing all forms of emotional trauma so that the sufferers can be treated and healed, I am partly sympathetic to Jezebel’s skeptical take on this new study. Read More... • Afghanistan War Veteran Assaults Infant Sons

  A 25-year-old Canadian soldier has received a light sentence for repeatedly assaulting his six-month-old triplets. The 25-year-old father, who remains anonymous to protect the identity of his children, returned from a three-and-a-half-month tour in Kandahar, Afghanistan suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Not surprisingly, caring for his triplet infants and two-year-old son proved more than he could handle. Desperate to make his babies stop crying, the soldier repeatedly squeezed and occasionally bit them. He was charged with assault after the babies were taken to the hospital with a total of 19 broken bones. Read More...
