A Penn State study released this week revealed three items of importance for nutritionally-minded parents everywhere:
#1. Kids don't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
#2. Parents have a tough time getting kids to eat fruits and vegetables.
#3. Sneaking vegetables into food will increase a kids' vegetable consumption.
Little do the researchers know that while one of their solutions really is a good one -- blending "stealth veggies" like broccoli and cauliflower into pasta sauce -- their three tenets are so tired that parents everywhere completely abandoned the whole five a day thing eons ago. Well, except for ketchup. And French fries. Which are really like two vegetables, obviously elevating them to "stealth" status.
Researchers did have a final note for healthy, rule-abiding parents who do choose to go with the whole doctored up spaghetti sauce idea: Be sure to give your kids extra vegetables on the side so they're sure to acquire a taste for vegetables even if they've unknowingly already eaten them.
Here at Strollerderby, we also suggest deep-frying and heavily salting those veggies on the side, just to ensure that kids really do learn to love them after all.
