Last month I was one of the judges for the New York finals of Baby Loves Disco's "Best Little Dancer in America" contest. It was absolute chaos, and very fun. Now it's your turn: until November 15th, you can watch free videos of all the winning baby-dancers, and vote for your favorites. Baby Loves Disco Contest: Like Studio 54, But More Diapers and Less Liza

So you think your baby can dance? Stride Rite is holding a Best Little Dancer in America contest. Apparently the Baby Loves Disco train will be stopping in 12 cities in search of the kid with the most funk. I don't think there's a real train, but judging by these sample videos, I don't think there's gonna be too much funk either. Because so far it looks like the bar has been set nice and low. Nobody really seems to be putting their heart into it. And you know what that means: if your kid has even the tiniest bit of rhythm, maybe he or she could be a big winner.

There are two age categories: ages 0-3 (I'm sure the 0-year-olds will have just dazzling footwork) and ages 4-7, with one winner and ten runners-up from each category. Voting is online, so even if you don't feel like making your child compete, you can still tear apart the dance skills of small children from the safety of your computer. And a portion of the proceeds go to charity. The rest go towards gold lame pantsuits and coke for the competitors. Ah, the 70s.

The Baby Loves Disco dance party phenomenon is sweeping the nation, and chances are, if you live in a big city and have kids, you've heard parents extolling its groovin' music, breastfeeding-friendly "chill-out zones," and organic snacks. If not? Click here.

This weekend, Baby Loves Disco heads south to kick off their Atlanta shindig at the Loft where there are plenty of tickets available. The rain in the Pacific Northwest can't stop (won't stop) the music. The shows in Portland and Seattle are sold out this weekend, but if you feel like road trippin', there are still tickets available for the San Francisco event on Saturday at Ruby Skye. Get 'em while they're hot!

See you at the disco! No, really! I'm goin'! Cuz there's nothing I love more than wrangling two kids hopped up on juice boxes dancing with scarves when they should be napping. No whining, baby. No whining on the dance floor...

Friendless with Kids: Trying to Find Your People Can Be Tough

When you get married, finding other couples with whom you have great friendship chemistry isn't easy to do. Finding a couple with kids with whom you share laughs, is even harder. I've hosted way too many dinner parties where all the parents sit and talk about their kids and diapers and toilet training and it makes your head hurt after awhile.

But the real issue is a shared approach to parenting and knowing when to cease all kid-speak. If someone talks incessantly about diapers and pee pee, I lose interest quickly. I live in a small town two hours North of Seattle and perhaps that's part of the problem. If you want to discuss the many health attributes of wheat-grass, this city is for you. If you want to meet silly laid back parents who drink (DRINK) in front of their kids, stay away.

Apparently, I'm not alone. Creative-Type Dad discusses the difficulty of finding like-minded parents with whom to socialize. Since he and his wife had their daughter, they still enjoy their kidless friends, but want to meet other parents so they can occasionally talk about kid-stuff without encountering incomprehension and glassy-eyed stares. So he was quite discouraged when his new friends stood he and his wife up at the Baby Loves Disco party in their town.

Chemistry and philosophies of childraising aside, there's also the small matter of being busy and tired and beleaguered, which makes developing friendships even harder. I've become quite used to relying on my virtual friendships to fill the gap, but you simply can't replace the joy of laughing out loud and long with another live human, especially if that person is a parent.

Baby Loves Disco: Family Dance Party Is Sweeping the Country

Okay. I truly thought that disco was dead. Turns out I'm wrong; it's hip!

You haven't seen anything until you've seen a room full of up to 400 under-8-year-olds and their parents doing the Hustle or getting down to the sounds of Evelyn "Champagne" king. That's right, Baby Loves Disco is not only the new, but the only (that I know of) family dance party, and it might be in your town! Currently in more than 16 cities from coast to coast, Baby Loves Disco is "transforming the hippest night clubs into child proof discos" at "an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real djs", and includes such extras as bubble machines, diaper-changing stations, an array of healthy and often organic snacks, plus (and this is where they hooked me) a bar for "non-driving adults".

For an average ticket price of $12 (a little more if you live in an already pricey city, and if you do, you know who you are) per "walking human" (non-walkers are free), you get up to 3 hours of non-structured fun with music, lights, and non-stop dancing under the muted tones of (naturally) a disco ball! Held monthly in some of the coolest night clubs in town, Baby Loves Disco promises to be one of the hottest places to hang out with your kids this winter.
