Sorry to have to oblige.

Craigslist, home of the great deals on couches and awesome hand-me-down sources for kids clothes, has become the go-to source for people trying to pimp out little kids. And numbers are rising.

The problem is particularly rampant in Atlanta, where A Future. Not A Past, a non-profit that works to fight child prostitution, says as many as one hundred seventy-six ads were posted on the free site in February trying to find a john for little girls.

The group released its findings last week, just as the FBI is working to prosecute two men they say pimped out a seventeen-year-old girl, passing her off as nineteen and using Craigslist to find men to have sex with her in an Atlanta motel. Last month, a Michigan man who called himself the Motor City Mink was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison for pimping kids out via the internet - with many of his ads on Craigslist. The man, Robert Daniels, was the first to be convicted in the nation under the Adam Walsh Law (named for the kidnapped and murdered child of America's Most Wanted host John Walsh), which requires federal penalties for running a child exploitation enterprise.

The fault isn't with Craigslist itself - the company has begun requiring all posters of ads that fall under the "erotic" category, and the company reached an agreement in November with the attorneys general of forty states to add a fee system for the erotic posters, including a valid credit card that could be tracked by law enforcement. Craigslist is also reportedly suing a group of software and Internet companies that allowed posters to circumvent its defenses and post illegal ads.

It's also not always adults doing the deed. Between 2005 and 2008, seventy teens were caught selling themselves on Craigslist.

Why the numbers are back up is anyone's guess, but I wonder how much of this is economic. Craiglist is free, which means people are turning to it more than ever now that the economy is bad. People are desperate, pushing a parent, a family friend, whoever, who might not have acted on an urge to sell a child's <strike>soul</strike> body for money are no longer held back by traditional mores. It's the same reason adults turn to it in hard times . . . and as a job, it's fairly recession proof.

As the economic picture gets bleaker, I can only wonder how many more horribly sad and depressing stories we're going to hear about things adults are doing to kids. If there is any good news out there it's this: courts are finally getting the picture that teen prostitutes need help not criminalization.

Image: American

Related Posts:

Do You Speak Up When You See a Child Hit in Public?

Economy Fix: Give 'Em All Jobs in Daycare

Is Pay to Play At Public Schools Fair?

Babysitter Sleeps While Kid Plays Among the Alligators

Your babysitter was never this bad - trust me.

A Florida sitter fell asleep on the toilet while her two-year-old charge went out and wandered around in an alligator-infested canal.

According to some reports, the boy was wearing nothing but a shirt and covered in feces when he was spotted and promptly rescued. When police got to the house, they say they found his babysitter on the toilet - passed out - and a bottle of oxycodone. The sitter, Brandy Albright, was woken up by police and placed under arrest for child endangerment, while the boy has been returned to his mom.

Unless you live in Florida or another coastal area of the country, you likely don't have to worry that your kid is going to be out playing with the alligators when you aren't home. But does a sitter really have to be told not to take drugs while they're watching your kid? There's a warning about not operating heavy machinery while taking these drugs on that bottle for a reason.

Just remember this one the next time you want to complain about your sitter. At least he or she remains upright throughout the day. If not, it's time you get yourself a new sitter!

Image: APP

Related Posts:

Dad Finds Kidnapped Kids in a Week, Cops Tried for Six Months

Writing is Working - I Promise

When Mom's a Sex Offender

Government Seizes Newborn from Mentally Disabled Mom 22 Hours After Birth

I'd like to say it was the unthinkable that happened to Barbara Gamble this week. Canadian authorities seized her sixth child just 22 hours after the little girl, Savannah Nicole Elizabeth, was born. It was just what Gamble and boyfriend Vince Kinney feared would happen.

In the weeks since first sharing their plight with a reporter from the Vancouver Sun, Gamble and Kinney have been the hot topic in Canada. They've become the poster children as much for poverty as for the rights of the disabled. The Canadian government has yet to allow the British Columbia residents to take home one of their children - because Gamble has an IQ that's classified her as "mentally handicapped." She's been quite literally referred to as "too stupid to parent."

She may never be able to take proper care of her children, according to some psychiatrists called in to evaluate her, and officials have said it would cost as much as $6,400 (Canadian) to pay for 10 hours a week of in-home support for Gamble during the first three months of Savannah's life. Gamble lives off government assistance herself, although Kinney (who has an IQ in "normal" range) works as a security guard. Both regularly rack up bills that far exceed the money coming in, and welfare officials have questioned the couple's understanding of their limitations.

Although my initial reaction was to let them take their kid home and just keep a close eye on the situation, a look at a mother in a similiar situation who spoke out in support of Gamble last week gave me a greater appreciation for the government's case. Equating the moms' intelligence to that of a 12-year-old, I realized, leaving a baby with a 12-year-old every day for the rest of his/her life would be grounds for child endangerment or child neglect here in America. A wait-and-see attitude on behalf of the Canadian government in this situation would be tantamount to turning a blind eye to possible child abuse.

Still, I've been holding out hope that before Savannah's birth and subsequent seizure, someone would have pitched in to offer some help for these parents. That someone would step in and work with Gamble to help her understand why having child after child is not the answer. Even a 12-year-old can be taught that in life there are rights and there are privileges. Barbara Gamble has a right to make decisions about her own womb. But parenting is still a privilege. The children she's already delivered are alive - somewhere - they should be the focus of her efforts to be a parent, a chance to show what she can do. Savannah is here now too, and if Gamble wants a chance to be her mom, she needs to put her first.

They didn't tell her not to serve beer to a toddler either. Oh yeah, and not to do it front of the police.

The New Mexico mom hit the trifecta in the competition for Dopiest Mom in America this week when a group of undercover officers were at her home to buy drugs from Neel-Blaker and her husband, James Blaker. First officers said they watched her give the couple's 18-month-old daughter a sip of beer from a can. Then she grabbed the baby girl's sippy cup and filled 'er up - "to make the baby sleep."

Perhaps she read Brett's post last week asking if anyone out there really thinks it's a good idea to give a 4-year-old a brewski? The cops said previous purchases of heroin and marijuana at the house, plus her offers to have sex with them for $100 apiece, suddenly took a backseat to the child abuse in front of them. Gee, you mean a mom who trafficks heroin out of her family's home isn't mother of the year material?

The little girl has been taken into custody by New Mexico authorities while her parents are in jail. At least one of us will be sleeping better.

The government has seized each one of Barbara Gamble's children shortly after she's given birth. Among their reasons? Gamble's intelligence quotient is somewhere between 63 and 71, officially "mildly mentally handi-capped." She told her story to Canadian press earlier this month because she's soon due to deliver her sixth child, and she worries the government will once again step in to snatch the child. I could certainly feel her pain at never being given a chance.

Nikki Ross did. She's 31 and mother to five. She's also got an IQ just below 70. She says she's doing just fine as a mom. I'm not convinced.

A single mom (she's divorced from the father of her four oldest kids), Ross doesn't have a job. Short of babysitting as a teenager, she never has. She lives off of government assistance and financial help from her mother. A volunteer agency lends help as well - paying a counselor who helps Nikki with everything from filing income taxes to devising activities for her non-school-aged kids. Her house is filled with sticker charts so she can keep on course with her day - and sometimes she's gotten off course. She's lost her children on and off, sometimes to the state and other times her mom has stepped in to take care of a grandchild. Her biggest accomplishment of late? Figuring out a bus route so she could take herself to the doctor. She has yet to master a calendar.

I'm not arguing the rights to life of the disabled. But what about the rights of their kids? When a mom will forever be 12 years old in her mind, how can she parent a defiant 16-year-old, help an 18-year-old go off to college? How can she handle a middle-of-the-night emergency with a sick toddler when she's only just figured out how to get herself to a doctor's visit at 31? Ross has her mother to help her, but 27-year-old Barbara Gamble doesn't have that sort of help. What she has is a boyfriend who racks up bills well beyond his salary and no job of her own. What she has is a mind psychologists call immature, distrusting, egocentric and lacking in insight. What she has is the mental maturity of a 12-year-old and a uterus that has housed baby after baby since she was 20 years old.

Most of us would consider parents supporting their 12-year-old getting pregnant to be bordering on child abuse. Allowing a 12-year-old to move out on their own after giving birth is unheard of. So, no, Nikki Ross' story didn't make me feel better about Barbara Gamble walking out of the hospital with the latest child she's given birth to in an attempt to convince the government she can be a parent. It made me wonder who would leave a child alone with a 12-year-old for the rest of his or her life.

The New Jersey couple left their 2-year-old in a motel room last week while they allegedly broke into a house in Weehawken.

When they were caught and placed under arrest, police said Espino claimed they were just trying get money together to buy diapers and formula. But when police entered the motel room, they found the 2-year-old watching television on the bed, and a pile of stolen electronics, including laptops and iPods. So far, the couple has been charged with a total of seven burglaries.

Covered in bruises, the little boy was rescued and taken into custody by the state while his parents were sent to jail on $20,000 bail. His mother is facing child endangerment charges, and his father has confessed to all seven burglaries. For the first time since they moved into the Weehawken hotel several months ago, the family at least has stable housing - albeit split up and all paid for by the state. The fact that the family was living in a motel makes Espino's claims of needing money to buy formual and diapers believable - they were, for all intents and purposes, homeless. One police report even says Espino, 22, had recently lost his job and worried about how to pay the motel bill.

Not that any of it gives a set of parents the right to leave a toddler unsupervised. For a little little boy, locked in a motel room, I can think of dozens of dangers just off the top of my head - from knocking the TV over onto himself to turning on the tub and an accidental drowning. What's more, the sheer terror for a toddler to be left alone without Mommy and Daddy gives me chills.

I'm not giving them a break for turning to crime either. If you can't feed your kid, you take it on the chin and beg, borrow . . . do anything short of stealing. In the words of Mr. Hand, stealing is bad, MmmKay?

But there's a little part of me that feels sorry for a mom and dad living in a flea bag motel (according to reports, the kid was covered in bed bug bites) who probably couldn't afford a babysitter even if they'd thought to call on one while they went off on their admittedly bad, bad errand. In this economy, I'm surprised there aren't more parents like Espino and Carillo just doing what they have to to pay the bills.

And I'd like to shake the hand of the Austin, Texas judge who told 20-year-old Felicia Salazar to keep her legs shut. At least he's trying.

Judge Charlie Baird has ordered the end to childbearing as a stipulation of the Texas mother's 10-year probation sentence on charges of injury to a child by omission. Her boyfriend, Roberto Alvarado, 25, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating the couple's then-19-month-old daughter last year. At the time, Salazar did nothing to protect the litte girl, nor did she seek medical treatment for her daughter's injuries.

Both parents have severed their rights to their daughter, who has been in foster care since being discharged from the hospital. The Texas legal community, meanwhile has been debating the constitutionality of Baird's order. If Salazar were sentenced to 10 years in prison, they say, she would naturally be kept from getting pregnant by the nature of confinement. But Baird didn't sentence her to prison. He's given her probation - outside with the general public - and added this as a condition. Texas judges are permitted by law to append probationary sentences, although there's no precedent for this sort of condition. There is, however, a Wisconsin case upheld by that state's Supreme Court, in which a father of nine was ordered to stop spreading his seed after intentionally failing to pay child support. That too was a condition of his probation.

Salazar's attorney is still debating the options, but I'd tell him to quit while he's ahead. Could the case be overturned? Maybe. But his client apparently doesn't know how to be a parent, why give her a chance to screw up again?

And if they were stopped on the interstate, it's likely they were speeding.

The parents, who are 18 and 19 years old, were released pending charges. The grandparents currently have custody of the child. And they were lucky the trooper pulled them over when they did – a 4-month-old baby in suburban Seattle died last year when his 19-year-old mom taped a binky to his face.

I understand the frustration, I really do, since I spend untold minutes each day scooping my son's binky off the floor where he pitched it, rinsing it off, and replacing it, and I always have to have a couple of backups if we're out in the big germy world. But, seriously, do teen parents need to be told that not only does a baby need to stay in a car seat, but perhaps a one of those little pacifier tethers is a better solution?

Proof again that the ability to reproduce does not make you 1) a good parent or 2) possessed of common sense.

Honey, Could You Drive Mommy to the Bar?

Most of us need a good stiff one every now and then. But generally, if one needs to get their drink on, they’ll find their own way to the local tavern to booze it up, not ask their twelve, yes TWELVE, year old daughter to do the driving.

On Wednesday, Jennifer Lynn Rosenberg’s 12-year-old was pulled over for turning the family minivan into a driveway while not using her turn signal and proceeded to bump into a house at low speed. The police, after discovering that the driver was a pre-teen, asked her where her parents were and she told them she had just dropped her mom off at the bar.

The police arrested mommy Rosenberg, who confirmed that her daughter did the driving, at the bar in question and she currently is in the Gregg County Jail in Longview, Texas on a $2,500 bond. Needless to say, the Child Protective Services will get involved…but at least she had a designated driver!

Three-Year-old Takes Joy Ride Atop Grandma’s Lexus

Whatever your worst nightmare is when you leave your kids
with Grandma, it can’t be worse than this.

A 54-year-old grandmother in the Florida
Keys was arrested and jailed after she was spotted driving her
Lexus around a parking lot with her three-year-old granddaughter on top of it.

According to deputies, Brenda Bouschet (pictured) said “she was just giving
the child some air and letting her have fun.” She also said she had one hand
out the window, holding the child’s leg, and that she was driving at
“snail-speed.” Bouschet seemed genuinely surprised to learn of laws requiring
children to be in car seats, and, uh, not on the roof of a moving vehicle.

Although Bouschet has been released from jail, she faces
child felony abuse charges. Her claims that she would never “let anything” hurt
her granddaughter seem genuine, but her behavior was frighteningly reckless.
What do you think? Should Grandma be let off the hook?

Photo: CBS4

After Miscarriage, Woman Paid $1,000 For a Baby

This is perhaps the most bizarre tale of child endangerment that you’ll ever read—and, thank God, the baby involved is unharmed, though in
need of loving parents.

A Pennsylvania
woman named Andrea Curry-Demus called paramedics last week and said she had
just given birth prematurely. She was rushed to the hospital with an infant
whose umbilical cord was still attached. Doctors were immediately suspicious of
the woman’s story since the baby appeared to be full-term. After examining Curry-Demus, they determined that she had not given birth and
called the police. Blood and hormone tests later revealed that Curry-Demus is
not the baby’s mother.

The 38-year-old woman told police that she had a miscarriage
in June, but she didn’t want to disappoint her mother by telling her the truth.
So she befriended a pregnant woman named Tina, and arranged to give Tina $1,000
for her baby. According to Curry-Demus, Tina showed up at her apartment
carrying the newborn, with the umbilical cord still attached. That's when Curry-Demus called an ambulance.

The healthy baby remains at the hospital while police try to
identify who the birth mother is. Curry-Demus, who faces charges of endangering the
welfare of a child, claims she's done nothing wrong.

Photo: totalbabyguide.com

Update:
Body Found in Curry-Demus' Apartment

It’s Raining Little Men: India’s Baby Throwing Ritual

Many experts believe a mother’s breast milk help a baby grow stronger. Al Pacino has made a career of this genre with Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, and Heat to name a few. By the end of the film we’re practically on the edge of our seats identifying with the criminal and cheering for him to get away with the cash in the helicopter the hostage negotiator promised him. But in reality police stand-offs hardly have happy endings and we rarely end up rooting for the bad guy; especially when they dangle children from balconies.

In Scarface, Pacino’s famous line was, “You wanna fuck with me? Okay. You wannna play rough? Okay. Say hello to my little friend.” Whereas Pacino’s little friend was an IMI Uzi 9mm, on Tuesday in LA the little friend was an 18-month old baby. A Los Angeles man choked and dangled his girlfriend’s 18 month old daughter over the edge of a motel railing threatening to drop her if police officers approached. The incident began when 24 year old Antonio Llerenas began arguing with his girlfriend then turned his aggression to the 18-month old and began to hit and choke the child. Llerenas tried to escape, but was tasered by the police and arrested.

Who is this King of Pop wannabe whose need for self-preservation is so strong that he would threaten to murder a child if it meant saving his own life? The basic instinct to protect my children at any cost even at the threat of losing my own life is not unique among parents; in fact I’m sure there are very few parents who would not give their lives to ensure the safety of their children. I find this instinct has even surfaced in me when seeing kids who are not mine being threatened or in danger. Evidently this inherent drive to protect a child is not universal and there are those would use an 18-month old as a human shield if it meant ensuring a quick getaway.

Thankfully this story does have a happy ending as the baby suffered only minor bruises and did not require hospitalization. The villain of the story however is being charged with attempted murder and should consider practicing another famous Pacino line if he ever wants to see the light of day again, “I’m out of order? You’re out of order! The whole trial is out of order!”

Either that or Attica! It's where popularity is the main currency, seatbelts aren’t required and punishment is dolled out in the form of rumor, ridicule, gossip, exclusion, and the occasional snowball. Where a sudden stop could mean the extraction of your two front teeth and where standing in front of the white line while the vehicle is in motion is a dare oft taken by the brave and impudent. You’re on the School Bus Baby you’re gonna die; or at the very least you’re going to get abandoned in a residential neighborhood by your driver.

The wheels on the bus go round and round until someone sneaks an ice ball onto the bus and the Driver of the bus says, “Fucking Kids.”, resists the urge to Ralph Kramden Bang Zoom each one of the hellions to the moon, parks the bus on the side of the road and leaves.

After unruly behavior on his bus reached critical mass and his attempts to calm the children failed, driver John Dexter of Rochester, New Hampshire parked the bus in a residential neighborhood, called his company to tell them about the situation and what he was about to do, turned his collar to the cold and damp, and walked away enjoying the sounds of silence.

Police officials originally considered charging Dexter with 29 counts of endangering the welfare of a child (one count for each insolent disrespectful brat he left on the bus), but after reviewing the details of the case chose not to charge him with any wrongdoing.

My guess is that after interviewing the kids and their parents, the police concluded that while abandoning a school bus of children is a crime, abandoning a school bus of douchebags is not.

As for my new hero...John Dexter, you’re the greatest.

Worst Mom Ever? Kids locked in cages. Kids forced to poop themselves. Kids forced to watch "Dancing with the Stars" over and over and over again.

This story takes the prize as the most horrible, the most abusive ever. Eunice Spry, 62, was convicted on a series of craziness that involved forcing her three foster kids to eat their own vomit, drink bleach and rat poop. That's only the beginning.

The old bag rubbed sand paper on hands and faces and forced one kid's hand onto a hot stove until it was a "gooey mess." One kid was confined to a wheelchair following an accident, and instead of helping the poor child learn to walk again, the old bag kept the kid in the chair to increase her own care payments.

This is one of those cases that highlights the inequity in punishment. Spry doles out this treatment for years and gets what? Jail? I'm all for the kids having a little revenge, starting with a bleach and rat poop cocktail.
(Via: Drudge Report)

Fair Trade?
