Zoo Officials Condemn Cubs To Starvation

I'm familiar with "the law of the jungle." And I know it's a "dog eat dog" world out there, where you either "kill or be killed." But I didn't know those rules applied in the zoo.

Three polar bear cubs in the Nuremberg Zoo are finding out the hard way. Keepers there decided not to intervene and feed the starving cubs, who had been rejected by their mother. The keepers thought that stepping in and removing the cubs would be, according to United Press International, "a manipulation of nature."

Hello! This is a ZOO, right? Isn't a zoo by definition a manipulation of nature? And isn't that ability to manipulate nature touted all the time as being essential to preserving hundreds of endangered species, by providing protected habits and promoting breeding programs?

Zoo officials are still hopeful the mother bear will come to her senses and start taking care of her cubs. If that doesn't happen, I hope the officials will come to their senses, and start taking care of the three endangered animals already in their custody.
