disclosure, sex talk has never been taboo in my house. For my 22-year-old
sister’s Christmas present, my dad and stepmom bought her a dildo. As my sister
limply grasped the 10-inch tower of giggling, Fire Engine Red rubberized flesh,
my dad sincerely said, “You haven’t dated in awhile. We thought you’d need
one.”

So, onto the
topic of sex talks and your kids. Some people, like Oprah’s gal pal Gayle,
think girls get too much sex info these days. O's on-call sex expert, Dr. Laura
Berman, (couldn’t we all use an on-call sex expert?) says the more info the
better. For example, says Dr. Berman, get that girl a vibrator.

Addison and Cassidy Hempel, both 5, hardly ever possess the
ability to walk, talk and eat. A rare disease they both share causes their
bodies to build up cholesterol, leading to debilitating physical and neurological
problems. The two girls must resort to wearing diapers and lost the ability to
speak months ago. There is no known cure for this disease, officially know as National
Niemann-Pick Disease but referred to by doctors as Childhood Alzheimer’s. Most
children with the disease die before their 20th birthday.

However; there may be hope in the experimental use of a drug
called cyclodextrin. Cyclodextrin, an additive in cholesterol-free foods that
studies show also might help combat the HIV virus, has not yet procured
approval from the FDA for use in the treatment of Childhood’s Alzheimer’s. The
Hempels now receive the treatment after their parents and doctor petitioned for
the FDA’s “compassionate use” program. The program allows patients with
life-threatening illness to use as-of-yet unapproved treatments if said
patients find no other medicinal options available.

Should the treatment prove successful, the Hempels may blaze
the way for cyclodextrin’s use in other children afflicted by this bizarre
disease.

Not enough." width="300" align="right" border="0" height="199" hspace="4" />I know there are lots of people out there who regularly scream about how trial lawyers are destroying the world through lawsuits. And doctors are having trouble keeping up with their malpractice insurance payments. But here's a case where I think you'll agree the award isn't enough.

Four years ago, a boy had part of his penis cut off during a circumcision. The part could have been reattached if his pediatrician had acted quickly enough to do so, according to the plaintiff. A Georgia jury agreed and awarded $1.8 million to the boy and $500,000 to his mother. Their names are being kept private, but the doctors' names aren't. They are "Haiba Sonyika, the obstetrician who performed the circumcision, and Cheryl J. Kendall, the pediatrician who treated the child later." The hospital was not found to be at fault.

See, this is a big screw-up, especially the part about the pediatrician not doing enough to re-attach the, um, piece. This is assuming that the jury's verdict is accurate; I don't know the specifics of the case, so I'm going by the article I read.

I'm always curious how a jury comes up with an amount of money in cases like this. This time, the mother received $500,000 for psychotherapy, and the $1.8 million for the boy "was based on a per-day formula for the child's life expectancy."

The attorney for the plaintiffs, David J. Llewellyn, "has been representing victims of wrongful circumcision and genital injury since 1995." So calling him "some dickhead lawyer" isn't an insult. (Sorry. But sometimes they make it so easy.)

Also interesting was the defense team's strategy of loading the jury with women. Another attorney for the plaintiff, Craig T. Jones, thought this wasn't going to work. "I figured if you have one man on the jury, he can explain to the women -- if they don't know -- how important a penis is to a man's self-image." Yeah, even if they don't, I would say cutting off anything that you weren't supposed to during an operation is a bad idea.

Source: Law.com

Image: SXC

Read more:

Woman Will Go Free If Son Comes Back To Life

Texas School Accused Of Student Cage Fighting

Abortion Ads On Television?

Parents Forgo Circumcision to Save Money

From Playboy to Medical School: Jenny McCarthy Now a Doctor

Love her or hate her, former Playboy Bunny and Singled Out host Jenny
McCarthy is donning a white coat for her new role: doctor. Her voice
for the fight to cure autism has earned McCarthy her medical degree
from Harvard Med.

The announcement comes just as McCarthy's fifth book, co-authored
with autism specialist Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, hits shelves. The work
behind Healing and Preventing Autism and McCarthy's extensive
research of the subject was subject of a face-off with science editor
Jeffrey Kluger this week in TIME Magazine.

But it's that work that has earned McCarthy the attention of
Harvard Med, one of the most respected institutions in America. They've
decided to grant McCarthy the degree not as an honorary title but with
full credentials. She will still have to pass the boards in order to
actually practice medicine.

Does the Harvard Med. seal of approval change your opinions of McCarthy?

Image: Amazon

Related Posts:

Congress: End Amber Alerts by 2010, MicroChip Newborns

What Do Madonna and Peanut Butter Have in Common?

Kid Falls 40 Feet Into Hands of Superheroes

4 Ways Birth and Breastfeeding Will Ruin Sex

Okay, I’m a guy so I don’t have much to input about sex
after birth from a woman perspective. Personally I’m for it and really down with pregnancy sex. Too
personal? Okay. Men, however, worry about what sex will be like after the big
show. And this can also differ quite a bit due to the form of birth: c-section
or front door. I am familiar with the Madonna Complex: when a man watches the baby
comes out of his wife’s vagina he has a hard time seeing said vagina as a
sexual object, instead viewing it more like a mommy tool or portal (and not a
sexy portal either).

But a guy’s perspective isn’t going to help you, as it turns
out many women lose their desire for sex after birth too.

So for the lady’s perspective, we turn to Hilda Hutcherson,
M.D., gynecologist and author of What
Your Mother Never Told You about Sex. Hilda cites four main culprits for
less sex after birth, some physical, some emotional.

#1 Prolactin

When a woman breastfeeds her body boosts her prolactin
levels. Prolactin is a hormone that kills your sex drive. For some reason your
body does not want you having sex while your breastfeeding. Could it be a way
of nature telling you to wait on making another baby until the first one is a
little older? Whatever the case, as long as you breastfeed you won’t have
desire to knock boots, so says Dr. Hilda.

#2 Mommy on the Brain

Now that you are a mother your focus switches off your
relationship with your partner and onto your relationship with your baby.
Taking on the role of mommy, you may stop seeing yourself as a sexual being.

#3 Bad Body Image

You probably saw this one coming. Many of you feel funky
about your post birth body. Things got stretched out; baby weight is still hanging
around. No matter how much your partner tells you you’re desirable, you just
can’t believe it.

#4 Fatigue

Yep, babies are freaking exhausting. Hell, two year-olds are
really exhausting. And when you’re that exhausted a vigorous romp is the
furthest thing from your mind.

What do you think? Is Dr. Hilda full of crap and are you
post-birth ladies getting it on with no problems?

More by this author:

Smackdown: Boob Nazis - Is Breastfeeding that Big A Deal? I mean, money can't buy you love, but it can buy you sex, right?

Well, maybe not. Zalman Silber, a "wealthy businessman" from Monsey, NY, has been accused of playing doctor, literally. Two women have charged that Silber rented a Park Avenue office and pretended to be a gynecologist. Then he gave the women, um, a full exam. This article at LoHud.com goes into a little bit more detail; let's just say that Silber did a very thorough examination.

He may have worked a similar scheme with a police officer in Rockland County. According to today's Daily News, Silber would tell women that they needed a gynecological exam in order to obtain a certain insurance policy, and that the exam had to be given by this doctor. At his house. Except that the doctor wasn't really a doctor, he was a cop. Then Silber would watch from another room. The officer has been suspended from the force without pay pending a full investigation.

It gets better (well, creepier). Silber's lawyer is Kenneth Gribetz, a former Rockland County District Attorney who resigned in a scandal that included such juicy details as an extra-marital affair and photos of him in women's clothing. So far his defense of Silber is that, "the statute of limitations [has] run out on two of the incidents cited by investigators," and "only two of four victims were able to pick Silber out of a lineup." Oh! Then he must be innocent.

This should be some trial.

Silber, a Hasidic Jew, is married with five children and another on the way. His wife Gila, "declined to comment." Wouldn't you?

Let be the first to say that Silber is not good for the Jews.

If you want to know how he got rich, you can read this article over at Inc.com. Silber created the Skyride, a simulated helicopter ride at the Empire State Building. He then sold the business for almost $10 million. A sample of his business advice: "Take advantage of other people's toil. That's really what everything is about." What a guy. He is described a "well-known philanthropist" who is "known within the Jewish community for helping people pay for medical care and other services." Or offering them a discount if he treats them himself! (Ba-dum-bum.) His ex-wife's brother, Alexander Halpert of Borough Park, Brooklyn, said, "He's a good man. When someone needed a doctor, he would arrange it." Yeah, maybe that's not the best thing to say right now.

It should be pointed out that all of these charges are unproven and are merely allegations. Even R. Kelly was found innocent. So who knows. But what a creepy story. It's like I've always said: men are pigs. comes this story: Two of Laurie Williamson's children were in wheelchairs and had feeding tubes. Her three kids altogether had at least 500 doctor's appointments in ten years in connection with a rare illness. And Williamson raised $150,000 between 2000 and 2005 from individuals and organizations for her kids' health issues.

One problem with this scenario: Prosecutors say she fabricated the illnesses to get the money. And she was convicted of child abuse and sentenced to 15 years for putting her son through two unnecessary surguries, for a nerve-stimulation device and a gastric feeding-button. The children were malnourished when they were taken into protective custody. She also told the kids they had a rare condition and would not survive past their teens. However, it's more likely she herself has a somewhat rare condition: Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a person makes up or induces symptoms in another to get attention. And in this case, $150,000.

The kids are now with a relative, and their mom is not allowed contact.
