Police Detain Suspects in Travolta Extortion Plot

As Famecrawler and several other media outlets reported earlier this week, some individuals in the Bahamas have allegedly attempted to extort money from John Travolta and Kelly Preston following the death of their son, Jett. Now one Bahamian lawmaker has resigned after she and two others were detained by police in connection with the plot.

Senator Pleasant Bridgewater tendered her resignation this morning, even though she maintains her innocence. Meanwhile, an ambulance driver remains in custody while Obie Whilchcombe, a member of the Bahamian Parliament and a supposed friend of the Travolta family, has been released by police. The details of the extortion attempt remain vague. Some Web sites initially reported that the individuals wanted Travolta to pay them $20 million in exchange for some photos of Jett prior to his passing, but now some are saying pictures had nothing to do with it.

Whatever the case may be, It's a devastating situation for John Travolta and Kelly Preston. And one that must be impossible to explain to their daughter, Ella, who is only 8. As a parent, my inclination would be to shield her entirely from what's going on with all this extortion business and just focus on helping her to cope with the loss of her brother. But with so much media attention on this latest incident, I would think it's next to impossible to do that.

I also wonder if Travolta and Preston are feeling even more protective of Ella. After losing one child, I am sure that they instinctively want to hold her closer and keep her life even more private than ever before, something that will be more challenging once she and her parents slowly return to regular life and attempt to dodge the aggressive photographers that will inevitably hound them.

Our hearts go out to all of the Travoltas, including Ella. Let's hope this latest development is the last turn of bad luck for a family that certainly deserves time to find some peace.

Much has already been written all over the Web, including here within the Babble blogs, about the terribly sad death of Jett Travolta. Unlike those who have (again) raised questions about whether the son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston actually had autism that went untreated, I don't want to speculate or make any allegations, especially during a time of what is undoubtedly immense grief for that family. But I do want to address a health issue that both Travolta and Preston have spoken openly about in regard to Jett: Kawasaki syndrome.

The disease has been mentioned so often as part of the coverage of the young Travolta's death that many parents may be confused about what it is and whether it's something from which their children could potentially suffer. So here are a few basic facts, along with links to other resources that can provide more information.

Kawasaki syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that, according to the Scientific American, usually affects children under the age of 5. Its cause is unknown, but we do know it is much more prevalent in boys, particularly those of Asian descent. However, the odds of your child getting it remain relatively small: Only 9 to 19 children out of 100,000 contract Kawasaki syndrome here in the U.S.

Before you start freaking out about whether your son or daughter has it, here are some of the symptoms: red eyes, a fever over 101 that lasts for several days, a rash on the torso and swollen lymph nodes. However, as this blog post on the U.S. News and World Report site notes, Kawasaki syndrome can often be hard to diagnose because those symptoms closely resemble the ones caused by the flu.

The biggest danger that Kawasaki syndrome presents is potential cardiac problems, but those can be prevented if it is diagnosed and treated right away. However, as a doctor told the Scientific American, Kawasaki patients often must be medically monitored for 10 to 20 years because the disease can have long-term effects on the heart. The upshot: It's serious business, but it's also by no means fatal, as long as it's recognized for what it is and handled appropriately.

So how does this all relate back to Jett Travolta? His parents say he had Kawasaki syndrome as a toddler. While there does is not definitive medical evidence that it causes seizures -- which is what ultimately led to Jett's death -- Travolta and Preston do believe that the condition resulted in lasting health issues for their son. They also contend that the chemicals from household cleaning products may have been the Kawasaki culprit, which is why Preston has been very outspoken on the issue of keeping such products away from very young children.

In fact, several years ago, Preston and the other woman most people think of as the leading lady in John Travolta's life -- his "Grease" co-star, Olivia Newton-John -- came to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about that very subject on behalf of the Children's Health Environmental Coalition. I was covering an event for People magazine at the National Press Club where both women spoke, and I distinctly remember listening to Preston talk about her son's health problems when, suddenly, she completely broke down in tears. Considering the pain and emotion she felt then, I can't even imagine how she is feeling right now, with her son gone.

Again, it's not entirely clear that Jett's exposure to things like carpet cleaner caused his Kawasaki syndrome (although some studies have suggested a connection between the two), or that Kawasaki syndrome is in any way responsible for his untimely death. But here are the takeaways from all of the above that I think we can agree on: as Preston and Newton-John stressed, we should all protect our kids from exposure to chemicals as much as we can. It's just a smart thing to do.

If we have any definitive reason to think our child might have Kawasaki syndrome, we should consult a doctor right away. And at least once a day, every day, we should pause to really look at and appreciate our kids, even when they refuse to sit in their booster seats and throw pieces of turkey all over the dining room. (Not that this happened to me yesterday or anything.)

As frightening as this is to consider, our kids can be taken away from us unexpectedly, for any number of reasons. And that's why we have to do our best to stay educated, keep them healthy and love them as fiercely and fully as we can.

I have always been interested in peace and justice issues, but I admit, since becoming a mother, I am cut to the bone when I see young children suffering helplessly due to war. The situation in Gaza is getting worse and worse, with nearly 600 civilian deaths so far and about half of them women and children. I don't know what we can do about it but I hope someone does something and soon.

Stateside, Barack Obama has been meeting with democratic leaders already, trying to round up early support for a huge tax break he'd like to see implmented by early February. It includes $500 for folks making under $200K and breaks for businesses. I'd say how very Republican of him, but I think, rather, he is a shrewd politician doing exactly what he needs to do to gain bipartisan support for his programs. But anyway, he is certainly no socialist. If only!

Bernie Madoff has, apparently, been spreading his own largess abroad. It seems he's given about a million dollars worth of jewelry to various family members and friends since posting his $10 million bail after his recent arrest. His sister-in-law might have worn your life savings to a New Year's Eve party, yo. As a result, prosecutors in his case are calling for the court to revoke his bail and put him behind bars until his trial. If he was a petty street criminal he'd certainly be in jail. I say bring out the cuff for Bernie.

Say what you will about autism denial and Scientology, we have nothing but sympathy for John Travolta and family. There was some speculation that Jett died of a head injury, but the autopsy has found it was a seizure.

Sorry to be such a downer today folks. It looks like the world is a mess this morning. On one final tragic note, it seems that Brown Pelicans in California are showing up ill, disoriented, bruised and dead in strange places and no one knows why. Maybe they are just sad.

On Jett Travolta, Howard Stern Gets It Right

This morning on Sirius XM Radio, Howard Stern commented on the death of John Travolta and Kelly Preston's son Jett Travolta. In the past, Howard has ruthlessly mocked Scientology; long before it was de rigeur to poke fun at L. Ron Hubbard's celebrity religion, he would read internal Scientology newsletters on the air, exposing their wackiness to the world at large. So one might expect Stern to go after Travolta with both barrels.

Not this time. He said that while some were going to condemn Travolta and Preston for not giving their son medication for what most people felt was autism, he wasn't going to go there, at least not today. Then he made the best point anyone can make about Jett's passing: "There's nothing sadder than burying your own child."

That phrase, "There's nothing sadder", gets thrown around much too easily in my opinion. For example, I once received an email from a parent telling me that there was "nothing sadder than an empty PTA meeting." So I wanted to give Stern credit for showing compassion, as well as use the opportunity to say something about the phrase "there's nothing sadder". Maybe I’m over-reacting, but it makes me nuts when people use it too freely. While I suppose it's possible that there is something sadder than burying your own child, I can guarantee you that there are many things sadder than an empty PTA meeting.

Now, lest you think that The Howard Stern Show has become an encounter group, he did later joke that kawasaki disease, which Jett reportedly suffered from, is a disease that "turns you into a motorcycle." (It was kind of a funny, throw away line said during a conversation.) So whatever you think of Howard or his long-running radio show, let's give him credit for getting this one right.
