Levi Calls BS on Bristol’s Abstinence-Only Message

I don’t whether to be disturbed or relieved that Levi Johnston has emerged as the voice of the reason in the ongoing Palin family drama.

After Bristol Palin assumed a (paid) role as the new face of abstinence-only sex education, Johnston decided to speak out about his, ah, more nuanced view of teen sexuality.

In this clip of his appearance on the Early Show yesterday, he is refreshingly frank about the problems with simply telling teenagers, “Don’t have sex! Don’t have sex!”

One great quote not included in the clip: “It's [abstinence] a great idea and a great message she's trying to send out to the world and all the young kids. It's not easy raising a baby. But I do think there's more things to it than just not having sex."

Johnston probably doesn’t know this, but the numbers support his view that it’s just not “realistic” to believe you can stop teen pregnancy with an abstinence-only message. Family planning services substantially reduce the number of abortions and unplanned pregnancies, particularly among poor women—who are certainly not getting paid to fly to New York and preach about how difficult it is to be a teen mom.

In an interview with Tyra Banks that will air on Monday, Levi Johnston says that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin "probably knew" that he was having sex with her daughter Bristol. Levi also tells Tyra that Mama Palin allowed the young lovers to sleep in the same bed at her home.

Well. As the Church Lady might say, isn't that special.

It's all well and good to scream and holler about how "the media" should "leave these kids alone," as Angie Harmon recently did on Fox News. But someone needs to tell these kids to stop doing so many interviews. I mean, Tyra? Really Levi? Why? If the reason is "because they asked," someone needs to point out to the young hockey player that "no thanks" is an acceptable reply.

Over at ParentDish, Susan Wagner writes that Bristol and Levi "clearly they haven't been getting very good guidance from the adults in their lives. It's our job as parents to help our teens mature into responsible people, and sometimes that means saying no -- to sex and to interviews." Funny how the advice from "the media" can be better than whatever these two seem to be getting from their own parents.

I was watching this video interview with Levi Johnston, aka the no-longer-future Mr. Bristol Palin. The breakup was mutual, Levi says. He needs to be more "mature" before marriage. (That sounds like it wasn't so mutual, but who knows.)

Then I saw this:
Check Neal Karlinsky's Twitter page. He'll be tweeting some behind-the-scenes details about the interview.

Um, OK. Sure. Why not. I'm curious about Twitter, which is the big thing online these days. All the kids and TV reporters are doing it. (Me too, by the way.) What does Neal have to say...uh, tweet?

"Levi says he takes son Tripp home alone on reg basis w/out Bristol's supervision--borrows her car seat to do so."

"Levi's son Tripp was born in Dec, but only pix he keeps in his pickup truck are ultrasounds--two of them!"

This is news? This was worth traveling to Alaska for? There's nothing else happening in the world?

Now, before someone else says "but you're writing about it!" let me say that yes, I am. And that contributes to the cacophony of caca we sometimes call "the media." I just wonder if maybe it's time to leave Levi and Bristol alone. Seriously, is it really important to talk about this anymore? During the campaign, fine. But now? Is there such a thing as going too far with news coverage, especially when it involves young people?

I guess that's where my frustration comes from. I understand that there is a market for celebrity news, or whatever you want to call this. And the "ambush them with a camera" thing that TMZ has perfected is the way to go. I get it. I don't care for it myself, but lots of people do. But when you have kids, and I still think of Bristol and Levi as "kids", I don't think it's fair to "tweet" what he has in his truck. Who's business is that?

(And before someone says "what about Chris Brown and Rihanna?" I think that's different as well. They're famous for making music, and they benefit from their image, which is heavily marketed, largely to young people, which is a different issue. Bristol is Sarah Palin's daughter, but Levi isn't even related. Leaving both of them alone is probably the way to go.)

What do you think? Is it time to leave "the kids" alone?

(One more thing. Can we please come up with a better name for this than "tweeting"? It sounds really stupid.)

Earlier today, Good Morning America caught up with the former GOP teen idol Levi Johnston—and by “caught up,” I mean accosted him in his car outside his house while he was on his way to the gym.

The 19-year-old confirmed that he and Bristol Palin had split up, but said that he could see their son Tripp whenever he wanted. “I’d give everything for him,” he said. “Fatherhood changes things.”

This is apparent if you compare the shy, seemingly level-headed guy talking to Good Morning America to the cocky teen who wrote on his MySpace page that he didn’t want to have kids just months before appearing on the RNC stage to signal his politically expedient commitment to marrying Bristol and raising their child together.

I’m so glad that both Bristol and Levi have been forthright with the press about the difficulties of being teen parents, in spite of the immense pressure upon them to make abstinence-only teachings look infallible. Levi admitted that he was not yet “mature” enough to marry Bristol and settle down. For now, he’s focusing on finding a job.

Although this situation is better for everyone involved than jumping into a forced marriage, it’s also clear exactly why family planning is so essential to gender equality. We can be pretty sure Bristol was neither headed to the gym nor career hunting this morning….

The most watched teen romance of 2008 had few convinced that it would last forever. Still, when Levi Johnston showed up at the Republican National Convention but hours after news broke that he and the VP nominee's daughter were expecting, there was a feeling, at least, that Mama Palin would control their message then and until the end of time.

But someone else has taken over the message now, namely Levi Johnston's sister, Mercede. She tells Star Magazine that 18-year-old Bristol broke off the young couple's engagement a while ago. And also that she's now allowing Levi to see their infant son, Tripp.

This contradicts what Bristol told FOX's Gretta Van Susteren, specifically that Levi was a hands-on father and that the two planned to marry after finishing their educations.

Mercede said the two split up more than a month ago and that Bristol has dropped out of school. Also, the sister reports Bristol won't let Levi see the baby, that she says some pretty harsh things about Levi and the Johnston family, and that she treats Levi badly.

So. Bristol's her own woman, but we can't help but wonder what Sarah's going to do or say about all this. But she's got her own problems with the state of Alaska to deal with.

I hope it's not true that Levi's not being allowed to see their son. That's just mean -- to Johnston and to the baby. Still, don't you feel just a little big sisterly toward Bristol? Notice, only 50 percent of the Palins mentioned in the post made it to this list.

An unauthorized biography of Alaska Gov. and once-U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin finally explains why Sarah Palin kept her pregnancy with son Trig a secret for so long -- even from her other four children.

According to Trailblazer: An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin, by PEOPLE Assistant Editor Lorenzo Benet, when Palin learned the baby would be born with Down Syndrome, she simply wanted to spare her other kids from unwanted attention.

From People.com:

"Not discussing the pregnancy with her daughters, she felt, would shorten the process and spare them from unwanted attention," according to the book, which was not authorized by Palin.

Trailblazer also reveals another reason Palin kept the pregnancy quiet. She tells Benet, who interviewed Palin and her family for a 2008 PEOPLE cover story: "Not knowing in my own heart if I was going to be ready to embrace a child with special needs – I couldn't talk about it."

We learn, too, that one of her daughter's busted her for being pregnant after discovering pictures of a sonogram.

There's also this about Bristol and Levi:

While Bristol was pregnant last year, she was living in Anchorage with her aunt and uncle, Heather and Kurt Bruce, and working at two espresso shops – while also attending West High School. Levi was 40 miles away in Wasilla, but, "there was certainly no ban on them dating," reports Trailblazer. "Levi used to drive to Anchorage to take Bristol out."

Heather Bruce is quoted as saying in the book, "He used to bring her flowers and take her to dinner and a movie. He would come in and say hello, but he says few words. He's a quiet boy."

Huh. Who knew?

Tripp Palin's Name Explained

Curious about the choice of Tripp for Bristol Palin's newborn son?

Laura Wattenberg ("The Baby Name Wizard"), told the Chicago Tribune that Bristol wanted to go with a "tr" name to go along with her brothers Track and Trig. That's speculation, of course, but it seems like as good a theory as any.

According to Wattenberg, adding the extra "p" is unusual – Trip with one p is "more traditional," and is a "preppy-style nickname for a 'third,' like the popular name Trey." The extra p usually makes it a surname, says Wattenberg, like Linda Tripp. Remember her? Wattenberg says that Bristol "is doubtless too young" to recall the woman who secretly taped her phone calls with Monica Lewinsky. I can't imagine anyone would name their child after Linda Tripp, especially making the choice to shift a last name to a first name. Although I guess if you really hated Bill Clinton, that might motivate someone to do it. I'd probably pick "Star", after Ken, but drop the extra R.

I didn't really think about how my kids' name would go together, although many families do. Melvin Van Peebles gave all of his children names that started with M, that way the initials would always be MVP. And George Foreman named all of his kids… George.

Anyway, here's the deal with the name, according a naming expert:

- Bristol probably wanted to continue with names that started with "tr".
- the extra P is unusual.
- it's a preppy name
- it means "third", like Trey.
- the name was probably not chosen to honor Linda Tripp.

I really wonder if these baby name gurus are just making stuff up as they go along. But hey, it's a tight economy, and work is work.

So there you have it!

So the economy's in the crapper, and parents are cutting back on everything from Santa to travel. So why are gifts pouring into the Palin household?

The former (so happy to say that) vice presidential candidate's father, Chuck Heath, told Grandparents.com that gifts for granddaughter Bristol Palin's soon-to-be born baby boy have been piling up from around the world. Really, this is what people are spending their money on?

In case none of you remember, the Palin family isn't exactly hurting. Mom just got offered a raise by one of the commissions she helped appoint (OK, OK, she turned it down - but who is actually getting offers for EXTRA money in their paycheck this year?). Then there are all those RNC shopping spree clothes (including that Ramones tee for a tot).

Bristol Palin does not need our charity. But at last count, Chuck Heath says there are one hundred thousand gifts waiting for baby boy Johnston. Yes, you read that right - one hundred thousand.

He admits she'll probably never use them all (ya think?), but I've yet to hear any offers to give these things away to a pregnancy center or maybe make some Christmases brighter around Alaska.

We get it, some people actually liked Sarah Palin. If you really want to pay tribute to her, how about donating some gifts in her name to someone who could actually use them?

Ooh, I know, how about one of those centers for pregnant teens she cut funding from? Just a suggestion.

I've got one question for Sarah Palin: Do your kids ever go to school?

That Bristol Palin has essentially been glued to her mother's side since the news broke that she's got Levi Johnston's bun in the oven has made me wonder if the Republicans have dropped all pretense of subtlety and are outright telling us they really don't think a girl needs an education once she's fulfilled her duty of making babies. Then Johnston announces he's opted out of school too and gotten a job in the Alaskan oil fields.

Why? The baby won't be here until December, yet no one thinks these teenagers should be spending the precious days left before the birth in a school building? Sarah Palin expects us to put her a heartbeat away from commander in chief because she's in charge of the Alaska National Guard, but has she forgotten she's also head of that state's education system? Not exactly a shining reference for becoming second-in-command to the guy overseeing the nation's department of education.

One quarter to one third of female dropouts in this country say pregnancy played a role in their decision to leave school before graduation. But a study by the Gates Foundation found the girls who dropped out of high school due to motherhood were more likely to say they would have stayed and done well if they'd had a little support. They were more likely to have been on track to graduate, many with higher marks than their peers.

So what happens to them? The National Women's Law Center report, When Girls Don't Graduate We All Fail, says dropouts have lower paying jobs, higher health risks and lower access to quality healthcare. Then - surprise, surprise - their kids turn around and drop out of school. Another shocker? Many end up living off the state. The NWLC report surmises that every student who graduates from high school saves the state as much as an average of $40,500 in total publich health and $3,000 in welfare expenditures over his or her lifetime.

Yet Levi Johnston has decided to forego his senior year of high school, and the woman who told us she's from a family of school teachers during the debate is OK with this? She's OK with her pregnant 17-year-old daughter spending days flitting around the country instead of sitting inside an Alaskan school building? No, there's been no official announcement that Bristol is droping out of school, but there's little evidence that she's actually attending. Considering the chunk of time she spent playing hooky last year that helped fuel (untrue) rumors that her baby brother was really her child, there's no sign her mother really cares.

Let me explain something to you Governor Palin, your job as a mom is to prepare your kids for their future. Want what's best for them and your grandchild? Tell your daughter to get her hind end back to Alaska and go to school. And call the Johnston family and tell them to do the same. Unless you want the people of Alaska to be stuck supporting them too.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the 18-year-old “Wasilla heartthrob” Levi Johnson, who’s engaged to Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, chatted about his relationship, his life and his upcoming child (hinting that it will be a boy). He says that his upcoming nuptials won’t be a “shotgun wedding” and that they always intended in marrying. Levi admits he was “a little shocked” when he found out that Bristol was knocked up, but he “quickly embraced the prospects of fatherhood”. To prep for his new life and responsibilities, he dropped out of high school and is now working at the North Slope oil fields.

After suddenly being thrust into the national spotlight, the “soft spoken” teen talked to a reporter to set the record straight on a myriad of topics. Here is Levi Johnston on…

On MySpace:
His MySpace page that stated “I’m a …redneck” and that “I don’t want kids” was a joke played by his friends and that they put it together and he had nothing to do with it.

On his relationship with Bristol:
• "We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do." He has dated Bristol since he was a high school freshman.

On hobbies:
He loves to hunt and has “bagged bears, sheep, elk, and caribou”.

On his tattoo:
Bristol had given him a promise ring a while back but he lost it while hunting. He opted to get her name tattooed on his finger so that, he thought he just lose another ring.

On Obama:
"I don't know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him."

Even a knee-jerk liberal mom like me can feel bad for Bristol Palin. Not because she’s facing the end of childhood before she’s even allowed to vote (or drink for that matter – how will she get through parenthood?). And not because her mom has thrown her to the ~~wolves~~ media by signing on to a national campaign for vice president during her teenage pregnancy. That's just the icing.

Here's the cake: By the time the nation’s possible Second Grandkid comes screaming into the world, Mrs. Levi Johnston (nee Palin) will be looking for sympathy for saggy boobs and stretch marks. And where's she going to find it? Grandma-to-be has the type of 44-year-old body that can hide a seven-month pregnancy, and we don't mean the type where you eye the belly and go "hmmm, do I risk getting smacked if I ask her when she's due?"

Even the moms deeply entrenched in Republican rhetoric are building voodoo dolls with a Sarah Palin head. Trust me. No mom has a body like that and makes friends on the playground. She’s the mom you shake hands with after you change a diaper – before you wash your hands. And I’m just another mommy. I’m not her hormonal teenage daughter.
Sorry Bristol, the books might say “nine months on and nine months off,” but you might want to hire a personal trainer before you pose for the next set of family portraits. That’s if you can find time for those "normal" mom moments.

Because she's going to come home from the hospital after an exhausting labor and delivery, and all she will want to do is sink down in the tub for a hot bath while that hunky hockey hubby takes care of the baby for 5 blessed minutes.
But wait, what's that knocking?

“Up and at ‘em, the early bird catches the moose. I was back to work in three days while your father took care of the baby, let's go babe."

So let's all take a moment to feel bad for Bristol Palin. . . . Oh, man, that knee is jerking again.

A blogger has uncovered a Facebook page that lists the VP candidate's daughter as Bristol Palin-Johnston, which would imply that she and her boyfriend Levi Johnston have made the Palin family whole again.

Only, I'm a little suspicious.

Why would her Facebook picture be one from the RNC? Holding her brother? Wouldn't it be of her in her natural setting? And a hyphenated name? I think maybe someone went ahead and signed up with her name. Which isn't very nice.

Plus, that means she's holding out for a proper wedding on the White House lawn!

Are Shotgun Weddings the Best Answer to Teen Pregnancy?

Teen pregnancy is certainly foremost on the nation’s brain these days. With one in three girls in the U.S. pregnant before the age of 20, this is not a bad thing. But many commentators are concerned that the national dialogue about teen pregnancy that has resulted from the Palin affair has made teen moms seem like heroes. I’m concerned, more specifically, that few have questioned whether shotgun weddings between teen parents-to-be are the best way out of a very difficult situation.

The Palin family has been careful to stress that Bristol Palin and her baby father’s, Levi Johnston, will eventually get married. Bristol may have gotten pregnant by accident out of wedlock, but she’s keeping the baby and she will marry the father—so she gets a standing ovation at the Republican National Convention. In other words, there’s nothing wrong with getting pregnant as a teen, so long as the accidental pregnancy gets turned into a traditional family unit.

There is no doubt that marriage can be the best choice for teen couples who are truly in love and committed to raising their baby together. But let’s not forget that there are numerous options available to teen parents. The couple could stay together but delay marriage until they feel certain that they want to spend their lives with each other. This would improve their odds of staying together, since teen marriages are two to three times more likely to end in divorce than adult marriages. Or the couple could break up, but co-parent the baby, along with the help of both of their families.

Clearly, Bristol and Levi are under undue pressure as teen parents-to-be. “Having the eyes of the entire country staring at you because of your baby’s mama’s mama is the biggest shotgun to aim at a young man’s head,” writes Marlene Davis in the Vancouver Sun. Not to mention the perks offered to Johnston by agreeing to play the part of father- and husband-to-be. Any 17-year-old, even one who proclaims himself a “f****n redneck” who doesn’t want kids, would have a hard time making a decision based on his authentic desires in this scenario.

But what about teens who don’t have the eyes of the world on them as they navigate the very difficult decisions they are faced with after an unplanned pregnancy? Marriage, particularly the first few years, is difficult even for mature couples in their 30s, who have solid working lives and are absolutely certain of their commitment to one another. Should this difficulty be added to the trials of raising a baby at 17?

I'm of the demographic that tends to tsk tsk upon the news of a 22-year-old cousin/friend/acquaintance/daughter of a co-worker getting married. "She's ruining her life," the cohorts and I whisper. "It'll never last!"

For teens who get married, we sigh that certain-doom sigh.

But, hmmmm, why all the negativity about young marriage? What the hell do I know about it and, in the end, does a little divorce under your belt even matter?

The NY Times has a great article about the fading attraction of teen marriage -- prompted of course by the bright attraction of Bristol Palin's teen pregnancy and her mother's assurances to the public that she and her boyfriend, Levi Johnston, will be wed.

The betrothed couple are technically still teens -- she's 17, he's 18 -- but in the not so distant past, theirs would not have been considered a "teen marriage." Still, the statistics are against them.

Studies show that today teenage marriages are two to three times more likely to end in divorce than are marriages between people 25 years of age and older. The most comprehensive study on marriage and age that sociologists cite was published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001, from 1995 data, and it found that 48 percent of those who marry before 18 are likely to divorce within 10 years, compared with 24 percent of those who marry after age 25.

But for those teens who stay married, they might actually be positioning themselves for a better life, one sociologist says in the piece.

If teen marriage freaks you out, the good news is ... it's very rare and getting rarer.

Here's a little mental torture I like to do on myself: what would I do if one of my daughters said that at 18 (or younger ... or even a few years older), she was engaged? I mean, besides freak out, what would I do? What would YOU do? Anyone out there married as a teen and think this is a non-discussion?

“I’m a f***in’ redneck,” so proclaims Sarah Palin’s Baby Daddy in law, Levi Johnston. The world only learned of the existence of Mr. Johnston a little over 24 hours ago, but already we’re getting a clearer picture of the man-boy. On a now offline MySpace page, Johnston added to his redneck remark his opinion on parenthood. “I live to play hockey ... I'll kick ass." Sounds like a teenager to me. However, next comes news a little distressing to Bristol. On the defunct page Johnston states, “I don’t want kids.” Now with Sarah Palin running a hard-line pro-life platform, there ain’t no way Bristol is getting rid of that baby. Congratulations to Bristol, but you have to consider how this unwed daughter looks on the ticket, especially if the daddy doesn’t want to play ball and jump into a shotgun marriage for some nice photo opps.

You might wonder if Bristol’s fate has anything to do with politics. For his part, Obama has called upon the media to keep the family out of the campaign. Fat chance. It’s a horrible spotlight for a girl to endure in this, her most private moment. One can only wonder if there will be a “first dude” of her own to stand by her and share the brunt of that attention.
