OMG OMG OMG! New Kids Rumors Hanging Tough

So what happens when the music of one's pre- and teen years comes back for an encore? One, whomever that may be, begins to hum "Hangin' Tough" only to have his 22-month-old, again, completely anonymous, daughter hum along with him. That's what.

I've never been more embarrassed.

It's bad enough Emmeline will occasionally sing, "Running just as fast as we can; holding on to one another's hand" in homage to another '80s star, but I don't know what I'll do when she suddenly breaks out with "Don't worry about nothing cause it won't take long; we're gonna put you in a trance with the funky song" -- because I was older then and should have known better.

That's right, the New Kids are back. (So nice Timberlake agreed to rejoin them ... oh, what?) And I'm frightened I'll pass on my horrible pop genes to my kid. Does she really need to know dad was a fan? She's already doomed to be mortified by my un-coolness when she's in ~~high school, middle school, elementary school,~~ preschool, does she really need any more proof?

Oh, and I love you Joey!

Bare Naked Ladies (and Other Music) for Kids

Surely the music wars in our house typify those going on around the country. One person likes Barney, one likes Sheryl Crow, another likes Metallica, still another Terri Clark. No matter who likes what, the other people grouse and complain and refuse to dance when their music is ousted by another's choice. And so it goes.

Happily, we've found some compromises, including the Fox and Branch CD, previously reviewed on Babble.

Clever parents recommends ten songs you should download for your kids that won't drive you nuts. Sadly, none contain the lyrics, "pour some sugar on me":

The 4.5 year old in our house loves Laurie Berkner. The rest of the family, not so much. The yodeling, the corny lyrics, the lame-ass guitar riffs... would someone please get this woman a Dan Zanes cd?! Maybe the next time a request to watch Laurie's DVD comes at me, I'll arrange a showing of this super cool new video instead... because you're never too young to learn about genetically engineered rampaging carnivores. Everyone wins!

Musical Composition Software for Kids = I Want It!

You know I am relaxing my Waldorfian death-grip on the no-computer-games-for-kids rule when I salivate when reading about Groovy, the new music composition software by the makers of Sibelius, considered one of the gold-standards in music composition software for adults.

Lest you think this is complicated stuff, we're assured that a kindergartner can compose a song, although it's designed for kids ages 5-11. The software teaches "the basics of instruments, music theory, notation and composition, and then lets them create their own songs by dragging and dropping musically infused shapes, instruments, characters or animations." So you can easily encourage your budding musical prodigy.

Mabe I'll buy it just for me. The kids can play Legos or something.
