They definitely play better than me.

Not only that, they have pretty solid taste in music. The Beatles, Ozzy Osbourne, Santana -- no Miley or Jonas Brothers for these guys.

Flipping through YouTube, there appear to be dozens of kids who play incredibly well. Screw Guitar Hero, this is the real thing.

First up: this guy does an amplified acoustic rendition of "Come Together". It would be impressive enough if he just nailed the basic riff. But he plays the lead guitar part, the bass line, and even taps out the drum beat on the side of the guitar. Sheesh.

Here's the original, for comparison purposes.

This kid, Yuto Miyazawa, is even better. First, he looks younger. Second, his guitar is bigger than he is. Third, he sings as well as plays. Last -- but certainly not least -- the song is Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train." Ohhhh yes. Later in the clip he does "Crossroads," echoing Clapton's guitar solo perfectly. Then he closes with "Smoky Char", a tune I'm not familiar with but he seems to play it pretty damn well. Each is with a different band, and each time he's the frontman -- er, frontkid.

Back to acoustic for Lucciano Pizzichini, a 7 year old who treats us to a little Carlos Santana. Despite having major guitar chops, he's still a kid -- check out the Spongebob sticker on his axe.

We make sure they eat right, have enough sleep, stop licking the lead off the windowsills, and enough with the TV already. We take it upon ourselves to be their nurturers, their caretakers, and help them develop into people who can eventually navigate the travails of life on their own. That's what parenting is. But how far would you go to protect your kids from unpleasant or harmful experiences?

Far enough to commit suicide?

Sharon Osbourne would.

Her father died last summer of a degenerative brain disease and it was tremendously difficult for her to watch his decline. “I saw my father suffer from the day he came back into my life in 2002
to the day he died in July. There's no way I could go through what he
did, or put my kids through that.”

So, the obvious answer is...suicide?

For Sharon and Ozzy, yes.

Moral and ethical questions aside, and assuming you've no compunction about suicide to begin with (and I haven't), somehow the notion of suicide being a "final gift of love" doesn't sit well with me. Suicide, and any death, is hardest on those left behind. I can't imagine that if the real reason was indeed to spare adult children the burden/difficulty of dealing with a drawn-out decline and eventual death, that suicide, hastening death, would be the answer. And in my mind, suicide is more about the person doing it than it is about anyone who might be left behind.

Jeez, how'd I get on THIS topic?

But seriously, as part of parenting, I think it's important to explore these tougher questions from time to time. Your kids are the only kids you'll have, and it's up to you how you play such a situation if it should arise.

P.S. You do have a will, don't you?

Does Beer Make a Good Baptism Gift?

I was chosen to be godfather for my youngest cousin, and about five minutes before his baptism I told my aunt, "You know, I'm not really religious in any way whatsoever -- does that matter?" I'm guessing the only reason she didn't slap me was because we were actually inside the church at the time, going over the last-minute details for the ceremony.

Needless to say, I have no idea what to buy for a baptism gift -- and I need to know fast. Dana's best friend is having her boy baptized Sunday, and we've drawn a complete blank on what to buy. A cross? A frame? An Ozzy Osbourne CD?

What makes for an appropriate baptism gift nowadays?

Daddy Wars: Gene Simmons vs. Ozzy Osbourne

The Mommy Wars are alive and kickin' - we know. But did you have any idea that the Daddy Wars were just as vicious - and that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne were on the front lines?

It seems that Simmons is less than pleased about comparisons between himself and Osbourne, and wants people to know that though they are both badass rockers, and they both have reality shows chronicling their home lives, that's where the similarities end.

Simmons took a dig at his rival, saying "My family is more structured, and they behave properly. My kids don't take drugs. They're well-mannered and properly disciplined, and I don't go letting dogs poop on the carpet." Well, alrighty then. And what is Simmons' secret to this happy family life? "I'm the Alpha Male and what I say goes."

Gene Simmons, the disciplinarian. I love it! A family of chimps would probably be better behaved the the Osbourne kids, granted - but still. Gene Simmons. Criticizing Ozzy Osbourne's... parenting style. It just doesn't get any better than that! As Simmons himself once said: Lick it up, dudes. Lick. It. Up!

[Photo originally posted at The Sun]
