Mom Puts 9 Year Old Girl On Craigs List For Revenge

This is just awful.

Margery Tannenbaum of Hauppauge, NY has been charged with the following crime -- putting the name and phone number of a 9-year-old girl on Craig's List with an ad saying "Looking for a good time?-w4m 21." (That's "woman for man," for those of us unfamiliar with the parlance of online sexytalk.)

Why would anyone do this? According to Suffolk County police, Ms. Tannenbaum did it to get back at one of her daughter's friends. According to 1010 WINS: "When interested respondents replied by e-mail, Tannenbaum is alleged to have given out the phone number for one of her daughter's rivals, which generated harassing telephone calls to that home." 22 calls, according to reports. On NY1 news' "In The Papers" segment this morning, anchorwoman Kristen Shaughnessy kept saying that the accused Long Island mom had a "degree in psychology." Perhaps with a minor in torture.

Some reports are pointing out a similarity to the creepy case of Lori Drew, the Missouri mother who made a fake MySpace profile to get back at Megan Meier, a teenager who eventually committed suicide because she became distraught over what was being said about her online. (That's a simplification, you can read more about the story here and here.) No one died in this case, and Ms. Tannenbaum hasn't had a trial yet. But the idea that a parent would do something like this to "get back" at a "rival" of one of their children, to get so involved in a dispute that their child was having with one of their peers... it's kind of mind-blowing. It's one thing to get angry. It's another to go off the deep end like this.

Mother Sets Fire to Her Daughter's Gloating Rapist

Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, 69, was sentenced to thirteen years in Spanish jail for the rape-at-knifepoint of a thirteen year old girl. Nine years into his time, Soriano was given a three day pass to return to his home town of Benejúzar and who should he run into but his victim’s mother. Reportedly Soriano taunted the mother saying, "How's your daughter?" right before entering a crowded bar.

The victim’s mother followed him.

Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames engulfed him, before walking out.

According to a witness:

"She didn't acknowledge anyone but walked up to Soriano, who was drinking a coffee, put her hand on his shoulder and turned him round to face her.

"Then she pulled the bottle she was carrying from under her arm and began to tip it over him. At first I didn't realize what was happening, but then I smelt the petrol. I jumped up and tried to grab her, but when she struck a match I got clear.

"The petrol was in a pool around Soriano, and she threw the match into it. It ignited with a whoosh, and he screamed and staggered about covered in flames. As people rushed outside to escape the flames, she just looked at him, then turned and walked away."

Soriano suffered 60 percent burns on his body. 11 days later he was dead.

After her daughter’s attack all those years ago, it’s said the mother suffered from mental illness. When questioned by police about the encounter with the rapist, the woman claimed to recollect nothing of it.

She is currently incarcerated.

In a passionate post, author Judith Levine takes on Vermont's proposed stiffening of sex offender laws. It's a very hard thing to be against, but Levine makes a strong case. Basically, she makes three points:

Evidence is lacking that any of these measures, which have been tried elsewhere, will do much good. It's not like we're starting with weak laws against this stuff.
The measures will cost a lot at a time where there isn't a lot of money to go around.
There is a very clear correlation with poverty and increased physical and sexual abuse, so the money would be better directed to anti-child-poverty programs that are currently being cut (and which these measures will cause to be cut further).

She writes: "The laws will accomplish only one sure thing: They will shield the Democratic legislature from charges that it is soft on pervs, at least until the next gruesome crime."

But can we the non-poor contain our fear and our lust for revenge enough to demand that our governments do what would actually protect the largest number of kids?

Oh, revenge can be such fun--particularly for uninvolved spectators.

An Australian woman returned home to find a pair of panties and an opened condom wrapper in her bed—the bed she had shared with her husband for 22 years. Wasting no time in declaring her discovery to all and sundry, she snapped a photo of the offending items and put it up for sale on Ebay, along with a description that left little to the imagination. Titling her piece “Empty Condom Packet and a Photo of the Tart’s Knickers,” the thoughtful woman did Ebay shoppers the favor of describing in detail this dramatic still life.

Of the panties, she writes, “They are so huge I thought they may make someone a nice shawl or, even better, something for Halloween perhaps.” Interestingly, the photograph juxtaposes the larger-than-life quality of the panties with the diminutive size of the condom wrapper, described by the artist as “size small.”

Next for sale on Ebay? Her husband’s Harley.

5 ways to get revenge on your kids

They're cute. We love them. But sometimes, they make us insane. "Revenge" may sound like too strong a word, but let's be honest: sometimes you want to get back at the little buggers.

Some of these are real, some are not, and some just go too far. I'll indicate what I think about each. None of these acts will, as far as I know, lead to your children placing you in an old-age home run by people who were deemed too mean for dental school. But use your own judgment.

-   Repurposing dinner: you know that chicken I cooked that you refused to eat? Here. You can have it for lunch. (This, I have done. In fact, I did it today.)
-   Take them to the wrong movie: Batman? Nah. We're seeing "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2." (This, I would not do, mostly because I can't imagine seeing any film about pants that travel. But if you like that sort of thing, give it a try.)
-   Replace their CDs with something you like better: goodbye Raffi, hello Elvis Costello! (This, I have not done, but I might try it.)
-   Sing those annoying songs that they like in public: Loudly. (Thanks to Hannah for this one.) Can't recall doing this but it's entirely possible that, after a sleepless week of 2am diaper changings, that I did.
-   Speak in gibberish if you catch them getting high: This was on an episode of "My Wife and Kids". The parents, Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell-Martin, speak sloooowwly, wear the strangest clothes they can find, and pretend to see things that aren't there. It was quite amusing, and it definitely scared "Junior" straight. Of course, that's on TV, but this could work. Certainly more fun than the standard "drugs are bad, bad, bad" speech.

I know there must be other ways to get back at 'em that I missed. Anyone got a good one? After all, it takes a village.

The plight of Alex Phillips offers a good lesson in how NOT to respond to a break-up. The 17-year-old Wisconsin teen (pictured) faces up to 16 years in prison for publishing naked photos of his ex-girlfriend on his MySpace page. If this sounds like the doings of a puritanical, punishment-happy society, wait till you learn a bit more about this lovely Alex character.

After Alex “dated” (which is probably a very tame way to put it) a 16-year-old girl for a while, they broke up and she started seeing someone else. Alex decided to teach his ex a little lesson about who she was dealing with—and about being a bit more cautious when she emailed photos in the future. He allegedly pasted on his MySpace page two nude photos that the girl had emailed to him during happier times. Suffice it to say that, according to the police report, one of the photos was a close-up that was not of the girl’s face.

Under this photo, Alex eloquently described his broken heart this way: “Yo tell me this bitch desurves this!!!!!....TF gets my leftovers….” I’ve included the ellipses to indicate references to the girl’s anatomy (or, more specifically, to what Alex did to said anatomy) that are best left to the imagination.

Unfortunately for Al, he took a similarly aggressive stance when police phoned him and asked him to remove the photos. “Fuck that,” he reportedly said. “I’m keeping them up.” Once he was brought in to custody and charged with child porn, defamation, and sexual exploitation of a minor, Alex conceded that he was simply “venting,” but he “probably should not have done this.” The girl told police she was “very upset.”

In a best case scenario, boys such as Alex Phillips would have some really good therapy for years before they were allowed any more contact with women. And 16-year-old girls would not email photos of their anatomy to boys like Alex. And teenage boys would not call girls bitches, and would know how to spell the word “deserve.” Considering that this is clearly not a “best-case scenario” world, what do you think of Alex Phillips: vicious pervert deserving of criminal prosecution or confused teenager who simply took these things a bit too far?

Kids these days. Spoiled they is. What do you get the child who has everything? Try and give them something nice like a yo-yo or handful of jacks and they roll their eyes and use their iPhone to flame you on MySpace. Thank god you can finally give win your child love back with a monument to conspicuous consumption: a $300 robot dinosaur.

Seriously people, since we already know the robots will eventually turn on us, why do we keep building them with such dangerous implements like a dinosaur’s crushing jaw, laser cannons and spinning blades. Just seems short sighted to me. Here’s what’s going to happen some rich parents are going to buy their punching bag of a son this robo dino. Said downtrodden boy, deluded with thoughts of revenge, will take to the neighborhood to hunts down all his bullies atop his snuggly cyber beast. And that’s when Johnny Bully will feed the tyke to his very own overgrown Teddy Ruxpin. Incidentally, it's from Playskool
