Well, now’s the time to cash in on their luck in being first family worthy doppelgangers.

According to New York Magazine, talent agencies are in a mad scrabble to get look-a-likes of Sasha, age seven, and Malia, age ten, in their stables. Ad agencies are looking to hire girls with a similar look and age for all sorts of bookings.

The president of the Wilhelmina Kids and Teens agency stated that “It’s a very specific age and a very specific ethnicity, so there aren’t that many girls that would necessarily fit the bill.”

If they are just looking for the age and ethnicity, that shouldn’t be an issue. To get total look alikes? Good luck. But when they do find them, I’ll bet we’ll see them hocking everything from toys to tater tots.

<a href="http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/53602/" and dad hit not one, not two but ten balls in their honor? They had a ball of their own in the form their own party with their new, very lucky, friends from school.

According to ABC News, for their first night in their new ridiculously historic home, the girls watched High School Musical 3 and the animated hit Bolt in the White House’s bright red plush 40 seater movie theater. After their double feature the White House staff organized a special treat for the girls and their friends, an educational scavenger hunt about the history of the White House. The staff did a similar scavenger hunt for Chelsea Clinton when she moved in.

The last clue in the scavenger hunt led them to a very special surprise behind a closed door. The Jonas Brothers, the girls favorite band. The boys joined the party and I’m sure delighted all the tweens in attendance.

Guess there are some perks with having Dad be president. With all that action last night it’s no wonder the girls played hooky from school today.

Source

Photo via Huffington Post

Barack Obama’s Letter to Sasha and Malia

Sasha and Malia, you are a pair of extraordinarily lucky girls. Soon you’ll be moving into a great big historic mansion, you’ll be getting an adorable new puppy and your Dad will be the most powerful man in the land. And yet he still has the time to sit down and write you the sweetest letter.

Sure it just happened to be published in Parade Magazine but hey, I guess Daddy’s a sharer. In this open letter entitled ‘What I Want for You – and Every Child in America’, Barack Obama wrote about his hopes and dreams for his kids, and all kids for that matter. He also professed his regret of having been a wee bit preoccupied over the past two years and letting them eat “all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you have.”

President-elect Obama shares with his daughters (and us all) what he wants for the kids of the U.S. including wanting all children to go “to schools worthy of their potential,” he wants them to “get good jobs,” and to “push the boundaries of discovery.” He continues to say that “these are the things I want for you-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.”

The letter is poignant, proud and touching. It makes me want to take pen to paper and write my own child a letter. Too bad she can’t read yet and too bad I don't have that much to say.

To read the letter in it’s entirety, visit Parade here. With almost a quarter million tickets being handed out for President-Elect Barack Obama's swearing in as the forty-fourth commander in chief and a crowd of four million expected, chances are Sasha and Malia won't be the only kids on the national mall. As for the rest of us? The 20th is a school day this year; not to mention a work day.

In fact the noon-time ceremony will be hard for all by stay-at-home parents with non-school-aged (or homeschooled) kids to watch. I'm crossing my fingers for a snow day, so I won't have to make a mad drive across town from nursery school pick-up to settle in in front of the TV. I expect my three-year-old will only have the patience for a few minutes of President Barack Obama before she's ready for me to flip to Noggin or play the ladybug game, but parents with older kids have an incredible opportunity to share history with their kids on a frosty Tuesday that's fast approaching.

Every inauguration's a teaching moment, but this is a day more akin to Kennedy's swearing in than Bush 2's second time at the podium (which I skipped, by the way - although I did watch the first). It will be the one and only time we will watch the first black president of the United States sworn in. When our kids are old farts like us, will they be able to talk about the day they watched it?

Is it worth it to you to make the drive to D.C.? Will you keep them home from school just to watch it at home? Or will the day be business as usual?

Image: Official Inauguration Site of the U.S. Senate

Related Posts:

An Obama Your Kids Can't Resist: Make the President-Elect in Cupcakes

A Taste of Sasha and Malia's White House Rules: But Can They Paint it Pink?

Woman in Labor Holds Off Delivery Until After Voting for Obama

Move Over Jackie, Make Way for the Second Mrs. O (Obama, That Is)

From 52 to 48 With Love: When Families are Split Down Political Lines

How do we love Michelle Obama? The family has decided. Did they choose a private or a public school?

According to the AP, Michelle Obama’s spokeswoman has stated that they have opted for the well-respected and prestigious Sidwell Friends School. This co-ed K to 12 Quaker school, which is affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends, has about 1000 students and costs a pretty penny at about $30,000 per kid. The Sidwell Friends is well known as the school that Chelsea Clinton went to as well as Al Gore’s children.

Malia and Sasha got a chance to check out the school earlier in the week and I guess they liked what they saw. The school boasts “academic excellence, Quaker values, prizing Diversity, environmental stewardship”, which will hopefully be a good match for both the girls. Being that the school has had experience with first families will also probably help in the transition.

Does the price tag of 30k per kid for something besides an Ivy League college shock you? And does if bother you that they are sending the girls to a high-end private school rather than a D.C. public school?

Malia & Sasha Obama Do D.C. my time. 10- Year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha will be whittling
away the majority of the next four years in two places, school and the
White House. Today they got a taste of both.

Michelle Obama
took her daughters on a field trip to Washington D.C. to check out the
family’s top choices of schools, a list that is not being disclosed by
the Obama camp. Michelle’s spokesperson said, "She brought the girls
to visit choices for their new schools to make sure they find the right
fit," she said. "Their move to Washington is her top priority." They
didn’t officially release the choices, but the very visible motorcades
may have said it all. There was a small motorcade outside of Sidwell
Friends (a private Quaker school that is Chelsea Clinton alma mater and
where two of Joe Biden’s granddaughters go) and Georgetown Day (a
private school that prides themselves on integration), but at both
schools there was no actual sightings of the first family to be.
Michelle did already do an initial tour of both the schools last week
when the Obamas came to meet with the George W. and Laura Bush.

And
speaking of the Bush family, Laura Bush invited the Obama’s over, with
grandma in tow, so the girls could check out their new home and, more
importantly, their new rooms. I’m sure besides the dog and the
schools, what they’re really thinking about is wall colors and curtain
choices. Regardless, it was a busy day and will be a busy next four
years.

Related Posts:
A Taste of Sasha and Malia's White House Rules: But Can They Paint it Pink?

Forget Michelle Obama - Sasha and Malia Are the Fashion Icons in the Family

Source: Salon/AP Photo: Men's Vogue

A Taste of Sasha and Malia's White House Rules: But Can They Paint it Pink?

It could well be the most historic home in America, but the White House will be a lot like any other house for Barack Obama's young daughters. So what are the limits for Sasha and Malia Obama when they move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.?

Apparently, the world really is their oyster now. An ABC News report puts the real rules in the hands of Barack and Michelle. I was kind of surprised, but I should have known. How do you tell the leader of the free world what he can and can't let his kids do? A taste of what's in store:

The girls will have their choice of bedrooms - sixteen different bedrooms to be exact.

If they want to paint the walls pink or splatter on a cow print, that's their perogative (or their parents' anyway).

Choosing what to borrow from presidential memorabilia and neighboring museums will be the hardest part of decorating their rooms. Amy Carter borrowed pint-sized furniture donated when Caroline Kennedy was a first kid. Might Sasha and Malia do the same?

Whatever the furnishings, they'll have to make their own beds each morning per Mom and Dad's rules

Kids in the kitchen are de rigeur in the White House. As MSNBC pundit said on the topic “people are obsessed with it.”

In Obama’s first post election press conference (which Madeline wrote about here), he said that the question of what kind of dog they’ll get is a “major issue” and he stated that there were two issues that are influencing their decision. One was that his daughter Malia is allergic, so they need to get a pet that is hypoallergenic. And he said that he has a preference for a ‘shelter’ dog, stating that “they are mutts like me”. Although the girls have expressed interest in a Goldendoodle, a Golden Retriever/ Poodle mix that Malia called an “optimal dog", Obama said they were also considering a Labradoodle, both of which are good fits for someone with dog allergies.

The decision is “a pressing issue in the Obama household” and apparently in the media as well. The public seems to have taken a vested interest in their decision. PETA says that getting a purebred would be “elitist.” The Best Friends Animal Society even got 50,000 signatures to try to persuade the Obama’s to get a shelter dog. What are other people advising about their choice?

Today Show: A pet expert said they shouldn’t get a puppy, they should get an adult dog so they know what kind of personality it has. They also said they should get some kind of small dog, since they family travels so much. A smaller dog will be easier to transport. They have an online poll and so far the Mutt is winning with over 100,000 votes.

People: The Dog Whisperer from People.com says that since they should have a medium energy dog they “could look for a rottweiler who is a medium level energy dog or a poodle who is a med level energy dog."

Jezebel: They did some research and came up with a list of pets available for adoption at shelters via Petfinder. The winner? A poodle.

DailyKos: They recently held an online poll. Of the 12,000 votes the choice of ‘mutt’ got 44% with Retriever and Terrier as runner-ups.

Daily Show : They recommended, along with a couple of small shelter dogs, a cat that was pretending to be a dog.

Perez Hilton: A Goldendoodle owner himself, he hopes that “…Michelle and Malia both get their way and find a Goldendoodle at a shelter.”

Oh so many options. The Huffington Post has posted a copy of Obama's schedule for today, and the first item on the agenda is "parent teacher conferences at his daughters' school with his wife Michelle."

The schedule goes on to enumerate a list of duties that would make someone like, oh me, want to crawl into a hole and hibernate for the winter. In addition to a meeting with the Economic Advisory Board on today's dire economic news, Obama will hold a press conference, attend his daily intelligence briefing, make a slew of post-election political phone calls, and record the Democratic Radio Address. I have a feeling that those parent teacher conferences felt like a mini-vacation.

As any parent in a high stress job knows, taking time out to play with your kids or help with their homework is not only good for your children; it also keeps you grounded and happy. The Obamas seem to understand this more than anyone.

Photo: Celebrity Babies Blog

Related Post:

Balancing Work and Parenting--When You're the First Lady

Balancing Work and Parenting--When You're a Campaign Reporter

Balancing Work and Parenting—When You're the First Lady

It’s hard to think of a more challenging place to balance
work and parenting than the White House. But in an interview with Newsweek, Michelle
Obama explains how she plans to continuing to being a “mom first.”

Fortunately, according to Michelle, Barack “loves hard work”
and she loves “timetables and timelines and all that good stuff,” so they’re maintaining
their cool in the face of a massive transition.

She hopes to continue keeping family life separate from
work life, which she says she and Barack have mostly managed to do for the last
year-and-a-half. She acknowledges that it will doubtless become more
challenging once they’re in the White House, but says that “staying connected
to friends and family who know you” helps. To the end, she’s hoping that her mother will move to D.C. with them, so she can continue to be actively involved in her granddaughters' lives.

Michelle has been adamant about finding the right schools
for Sasha and Malia, attending parent-teacher conferences and all of their events,
and getting them involved in activities they’re excited about—in other words, she
and Barack will remain devoted, hands-on parents “no matter what their father’s
job is.”

Michelle believes this level of commitment is important not only for Sasha and
Malia, but as a model for other families: if even the president of the United States
helps his kids with his homework, we can all find time to help our kids with
their homework. “[Kids] have to be center in this society and this nation. We
have to put their education, their needs, their well-being first and foremost.
As adults, we can balance the other stuff. We're the grown-ups,” Michelle said,
laughing.

As for the criticism she faced on the campaign trail, Michelle
said, “Regardless of how they feel about Barack or the candidates, people are
decent and they're kind. They are willing to give you a chance to prove
yourself to them.” Now there is a lesson to pass on to our kids.

Related Post:

Balancing Work and Parenting—When You're a Campaign Reporter

Trick or Treating With the Obamas: Scary or Too Cute?

Malia and Sasha Obama were trying to scare their dad when they dressed up as an "evil fairy" and corpse bride. Too bad the presidential candidate thought they were just too cute to be scary. It's a story Michelle Obama shared in a post to the largely female population of bloggers at BlogHer this week.

The Democratic candidate's wife highlighted a tale that could have happened in any house in America this week (I was wrapped in a hug by a friend's son who quickly turned and "grrrred" at me and asked, "are you scared?"). And she did so to introduce some snippets of campaign life that have driven home the greatest point we all need to remember come Wednesday morning.

As polarizing as the issues have been, as dedicated as we may have become to our separate causes, as passionate as we may always (and should always) be, come Wednesday morning, the vote is over. What will be left is a country full of people with the same basic goals in mind: food, shelter, clothing. Every parent, particularly, has a singular thought day in and day out: to give our children the best life possible. The ways we go about doing that, what that "best life" entails are all different. There's no getting around that, and only a fool would expect that to change on Wednesday morning.

But the little girls bouncing around a presidential candidate's home this week, tromping from door-to-door on Friday like millions of kids, wearing costumes worn by thousands of other little girls in America, are a reminder that no matter where we are and what we think, when life gets scary, we look at our kids. Cheesy? Yes. Sappy? You're darn tootin'. But our kids haven't been screwed up by all the adult ideas and mistakes yet. They're still just too cute to scare us.

presidential pick has conveniently upstaged all reports of Barack Obama’s
acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention (which you can watch
here).

While I, too, am shocked and fascinated by the fact that
McCain’s running mate is an inexperienced, staunchly anti-choice woman whom only
he’s only met one time,
let’s not forget to keep our eyes on Obama and Biden.

Much of the reports on Palin have focused, on the one hand,
on her decision not to abort her child with down’s syndrome (if this makes her
a hero, our nation has set the bar abysmally low), and on questions about her
commitment to her five children, including an infant, on the other hand. So, if
we’re going to judge Palin’s parenting record, what do we know about Obama’s? Obama has repeatedly urged parents to be more involved in their
children’s lives, and his own interactions with his daughters Sasha and Malia
indicate that he is truly a devoted, loving father.

This short video from the DNC shows the Obama family chatting, albeit in a very stilted environment. While the strong love amongst the Obamas is clear, one could argue that the children
of any presidential nominee will inevitably suffer as their parents are
consumed by the campaign. What do you think—is it possible to compete for the
White House while putting your children first?

Photo: BrotherPeaceMaker
