Life's a freakshow, especially when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. Litters of a babies, babies having babies, gigantic babies, and, fine, Octomom and Thomas Beatie.

The Mirror has compiled a Who's Who of procreative and gestational oddities.

(1) Let's start with the world's youngest mother, Lina Medina, who gave birth in 1939. She was only five years old.

Medina's father took her to doctors for a lump in her abdomen. That lump was a baby -- Lina was seven months pregnant. Authorities immediately arrested the father for incest. The baby survived. Turns out, Lina had been getting periods since she was three years old. See? Freakshow! (Albeit a sad one.)

(2) Next, we have the world's largest newborn ever recorded -- 23.12 pounds, born in 1879 to Canadian Anna Bates. Sadly, the baby died 11 hours after birth.

(3) Tiniest surviving newborn ever is Rumaisa Shaik, who weighed 8.6 ounces at birth in 2004.

4) A Russian woman, known only as "the wife of Feodor Vassilyev," reportedly had a stunning number of children -- 69. This was all back in the 18th Century, so who knows if it's true. But the nearly seven dozen kids came from just 27 pregnancies. (Just! The Duggars are getting to me.) She had 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four quadruplets.

(5) Octomom. But after (4), she's kind of boring.

(6) The first pregnant man, too. Thomas Beatie, you know the story.

(7) The most babies from a single egg fertilized by a single sperm: the Khamsa quadruplets. They're identical.

This mom is BRAVE. And totally awesome.

A mom allowed herself to be photographed throughout the weeks of her pregnancy with triplets. Then she jumped forward to three months after delivery and struck the same pose - shirt pulled up to just below the boobs and everything hanging out.

Wow. The stretch marks are scary, but honestly, they're what to be expected for normal women who get stretchmarks (because, I'm sorry, but I have some intense loathing going on for you "Oh, I didn't get a mark" women - I fart in your general direction) and one carrying three babies at that. But look at that tummy tone! Go mama!

I love these kinds of pictures, honestly, because they remind me that my tummy will never be toned again . . . and that's OK. I don't need to look like Angelina, and my husband doesn't think I need to look like Angelina.

Because the picture at the very end of the long series of triplet pics says it all - it's the three "sweet peas" (her words) she got out of it all. Yeah, totally worth it.

Playdate: Four Times the Fun Says "I Could Have Been Octomom"

Michele, mother of triplets conceived via IVF tells all in her blog "Four Times the Fun." What does "all" include? Michele takes the uninitiated behind the scenes of IVF to discuss how hastily and under what pressure-cooker circumstances decisions are made about the number of embryos get transferred in an IVF procedure. She confesses that given her and her husband's own seat-of-the-pants decision making on transfer day, she might have become the mother of more than triplets, herself. Here's a sneak preview:

"[My husband] looked at me and said, "We're already in to this thing 40 grand and it isn't going to work, and we aren't freezing any again. I'm not shelling out another 5000 bucks to do IVIG on frozen crappy 4 cell embryos."

Then he looked at the doctor and said, "Put them all in. If two are really bad and not going to make it, then we aren't freezing them, so let it play out."

At no point when I was laying on the table with my bladder ready to explode did the doctor say to me, "Guidelines were issued in 1996 by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, with the intent to cut down the number of multiple births, particularly triplets and higher, that can result when many embryos are implanted and more than one takes. Big multiple births can lead to disastrous, life-threatening complications, lifelong disabilities such as cerebral palsy, and crushing medical costs."

No. He said, "Okay. That sounds great. Sorry about the wait. You'll be able to use the bed pan in just a few minutes, Mrs. S."

Michele also casts some helpful light on the subject of fertility specialists and regulation in a post about the ethics of what Nadya Suleman's doctor did. (The post was written before everything was known about Suleman's case, and has some inaccuracies, but her point is unchanged, regardless.)

Perhaps most interesting and useful for those of us who haven't undergone any fertility treatments or the difficult decisions they can entail, Michele's commenters are largely high-order multiple moms themselves, with their own IVF or medicated IUI stories to tell.

All in all, this blog adds a lot to the conversation about fertility medicine and drawing lines about and around it.

Grandma Serves as Surrogate, Gives Birth to Triplet Granddaughters

Kim Coseno's triplets had the same exact start in life as their mother . . . right down to the womb where they spent their first formative months. The surrogate "mother" who gave birth this week to Coseno's three little girls is also their grandmother.

Coseno's mom, fifty-six-year-old Jaci Dalenberg is possibly the oldest-ever surrogate to give birth to triplets. And lucky for her, she doesn't have to give them up! Well, not exactly. Already a mother of two, Coseno was no longer able to have children when her second husband, Joe, said he wanted them. The couple tried adopting, but were getting nowhere when Dalenberg made an offer they couldn't refuse.

Still in the prime of health, Dalenberg said she'd undergo in vitro fertilization. On the third try, two eggs transplanted into her uterus took.One embryo then split, creating a set of identical twins. Their sister is essentially a fraternal twin to each.

Although the "I am my own grandma" jokes go hand-in-hand with this story, I've got to give this granny a whole lot of credit. Triplets. At her age.

And while surrogacy kind of skeeves me out (for the surrogate, not for the parents-to-be), this seems like the best possible option. The Cosenos knew they could trust their surrogate completely, and that their babies were in a truly safe "home." Dalenberg, on the other hand, doesn't have to hand over the babies she carried and never see them again. She will be able to spoil them to bits, and then hand them back to Mom and Dad for the discipline and diaper-changing. She is, after all, Grandma.

We might count monkeys among our relatives (shhh, don't tell Sarah Palin), but I'm happy to say most of us wouldn't do what a marmoset mom of triplets did to the cutest thing I've seen since my kid wrapped her arms around her best friend and puckered up.

The marmoset at a British safari park gave birth to a rare set of triplets, but with two teets and three babies, she did the math. Her decision? Bye bye little monkey. Fortunately for little John Wayne (because he's a quiet man? I don't know - he's definitely no challenge to the Duke in stature), the park photographer has stepped in to play foster mom.

John Wayne is barely the size of photographer Penny Boyd's thumb, and she has to feed him with a syringe at two-hour intervals throughout the day and night. Apparently newborn marmosets don't sleep through the night either (an inherited trait?). This is actually the second baby monkey Boyd has had to adopt since marmosets were introduced at the tourist destination. Elliott is older, but not much bigger - marmosets are the world's smallest primates.

She says John Wayne will make an excellent little brother for Elliott to play with. Let's just hope he doesn't get too cheeky.

It's supposed to be rare. I mean one in a million kind of rare. But for the second time in a week, we've got the births of three identical babies to report here on the 'Derby.

This time it's a set of bouncing baby boys, born via Cesarean to Kerry and Desmond Lyons of Irvington, NY, on Friday, the day Hannah reported on identical twin girls born to a mom who was on the pill at time of conception. The Lyons have a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old at home, and were another couple who required no help on the fertility path.

They were trying for just one more, which means a bigger car and a bigger house are probably in the cards for the Lyons. More pressing right now is trying to tell the boys apart. Kerry's answer is a little bit of nail polish on the pinky toe.

I'd be worried more about breastfeeding three with just two boobs or carrying three with just two arms, but we all have different priorities. And I can feel their pain - looking back at pictures of my twin uncles when they were any younger than 5 or 6, I have trouble telling them apart - and they're fraternal, not identical! I may never know if I'm really talking to Uncle Mike . . . or Uncle Bill.

The chances of getting pregnant while on the birth control pill are about 1 to 2 percent—this is actually not an insignificant percentage, when you consider that about 2 women out of 100 on the pill will get pregnant. But the chances of having identical triplets are laughably minuscule: 200 million to one.

So, the odds of having both of these things happen simultaneously are, well, too tiny for me to wrap my mind around. But that is exactly what happened to 22-year-old Kirsty Hale. Though they profess to be still in shock, Hale and her fiancé, 28-year-old Toby Wilson, quickly adjusted to the idea of becoming an “instant family.” Lily, Gabriella, and Alicia were born by emergency C-section a few days ago, and are all in good health.

If you believe the universe is balanced, that tragedy and good fortune come in equal measure, here is news that will buoy you. Lori and Chris Coble welcomed a set of triplets into the world last Wednesday, almost a year to the day after their three children where taken in an automotive accident…

The newborns Ashley, Ellie and Jake, were delivered by c-section at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County and all, including mom Lori, are doing well.

I do not know what it would be like to have more kids after losing a child. It’s a kind of moving on that I know is healthy, but hard for me to imagine. If I were put in the situation however, I could see myself feeling very different over time.

Really, Really Rare Birth: Identical Triplets

For starters, getting pregnant with triplets is a surprise, right? Sure, it's not terribly unusual when we're talking about in-vitro and embryo transfers, which we are. Hang on, hang on, hang on. This isn't fertility treatment business as usual.

In this case, the doctor only transferred one embryo into the N.Y. mother-to-be's womb! What the ...?

At some point, that embryo split in half, and one of those halves split again. Three babies. All identical. The odds are pretty rare.

From FoxNews.com:

"This is the first one we're aware of in the literature in the country in which they only put back one embryo" and a woman gave birth to triplets, said Klein. "Most people put back two or three embryos, and you just never know."

Depending on the literature, experts estimate chances for identical triplets are between one and 60,000 and one and 200 million. (OK, that's a pretty big spread.)

The boys were born quite healthy and definitely identical -- an issue quickly solved via health and beauty aids.

To help tell them apart, the boys have a dot of maroon nail polish on their fingers. Logan Thomas, who weighed 4 pounds, 12 ounces, has a mark on his thumb; Eli Kirkwood, a 4-pounder, has polish on his forefinger, and Collin McGuire, at 4 pounds, 11 ounces, has a mark on his middle finger. Logan may have a problem with a non-functioning kidney, but the other children are healthy, doctors said.

16-Year-Old Girl Gives Birth To Triplets...Um, Again

Plenty of people get upset about teen pregnancy, and this one makes Jamie Lynn Spears seem relatively chaste by comparison. A 16-year-old in Argentina just gave birth to triplets. Oh, and the mom and babies are doing well, thanks for asking. So why has this caused such a kerfuffle, touching off debates and criticism all over Argentina.

Well, um, it isn't her first set of triplets. She had her first baby at age 14, and then at age 15, triplets. Making these latest triplets at age 16 the second set, no fertility treatments. Yes, that's seven kids altogether, for those keeping score at home. Provincial authorities built the brood a home and donated land when the first triplets emerged, but now some folks are saying the girl needs birth control advice, not more financial assistance. And the girl's mom, who cleans houses to help support her daughter and many grandkids, says yes, they will be seeking help from the government.

Doctors Want Fewer Twins

Doctors are suddenly on a tear to reduce the number of twins and triplets born in the U.S. Twins are everywhere and triplets aren't really all that original anymore either thanks to advances in fertility treatments.

But considering the health risks multiple births pose to both moms and babies, those in the business are looking for ways to lower the number of triplet -- and even twin -- births.

For starters, they want to implant fewer fertilized eggs. But everybody knows fertility treatments cost a fortune.

From the NY Times:

“People have to recognize that there’s a connection between cost and how the treatment is going to play out,” said Barbara Collura, executive director of Resolve, a patient advocacy organization for people with infertility. “If you have $10,000 that you’ve begged, borrowed and stolen for this one I.V.F. cycle, you’re not going to say, ‘Please just transfer one.’ ”

Others want to wait five days after the extracted egg is fertilized instead of only three. That gives more time for abnormal chromosomes to be revealed, thereby disqualifying a greater number of embryos and allowing fewer to be transfered while maintaining the odds one will turn into a viable pregnancy.

Better screening, fewer embryo transfers, and telling would-be moms of the risks that mulitple births carry is the plan so far. What else? Do you think multiple births are a problem? What was your experience?

Many Kids, Much Work: How Do They Do It?

Want to feel like a big old slacker? Then check these families out.

The article from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel looks at families with twins or triplets, and sometimes other kids, who balance a full family slate with a full time job. Many of the parents profiled are high achievers as well. One made partner at her law firm right before the birth of her twins, for example.

There are some lessons here for everybody, I think, no matter how many kids you have or whether or not you work outside the home.

All these women talk about the importance of their support network. The lawyer who made partner created a group of fellow lawyers who could pinch hit for each other in court, for example. Another, a therapist who works with mentally ill kids, rearranges her schedule so her husband can be there during the day and she does duty at night. And all of them talk about the importance of their spouse's stepping up too. One dad ended up taking 11 sick days the first year his wife went back to work after the birth of their triplets, and other dads shoulder half the housework or sometimes most of the burden of being the stay-at-home parent.

And all of them cite the importance of working in being good role models for their kids. Many also found lots of support in a parents of multiples group.

Doctors Find Two Dead Siblings In the Stomach of a Lone Triplet

Doctors removed two siblings from the body of a one-year-old in Indonesia yesterday. The girl’s siblings were removed from her abdomen and the surviving triplet, who absorbed her unviable sisters, is expected to survive.

Doctors discovered the triplets when they examined the living child for what they thought were abdominal tumors but turned out to be partially formed human bodies.

The surgery took five hours, but was complicated. The aortas of the two absorbed triplets were still linked with the surviving girl's.

One of the bodies, according the story, was totally complete, except for arms and legs. And the other had ony a head, but with hair, and also part of a digestive system.

Doctors said the two would have been lifeless when the girl was born.

This makes little Lakshmi's recent twin removal seem half-way normal.

Keeping Twins Together Can Be Good, Group Says

Parents of twins or other multiples have a lot to deal with – between fending off annoying questions from the well-meaning but curious ("Are those triplets? Did you use drugs?" from random strangers) to the very real issues of parenting two or more little people who are the same age but otherwise distinctly different people.
One big issue is the idea of mandatory separation in schools. Many districts require that multiples be in separate classes, as a way to reinforce their individuality and reduce the "exotic" factor that still comes with twins and can distract everybody.

However, there are lots of parents who are not too into the idea. Many of them say that theirs kids have never been separated, and that the strong bond they have makes them happier in school and should be honored. A New York mother, Kathy Dolan, founded the website TwinsLaw.com in 2006 after fighting to keep her own twins together in school. They've worked in 15 states for legislation to allow parents, not school administrators or teachers, to have the final say about whether their children are kept together or apart. Massachusetts is the latest to weigh legislation, and laws have been passed in Minnesota, Texas, Georgia and New Hampshire.

This article from the Boulder Daily Camera discusses the issue in a rather more balanced way. Some kids love being with their sibs,while some were thrilled to make their own friends.

My college roommate has triplets, and reports that now that the kids are 10 and in fourth grade everybody at their school has kind of gotten over" the triplets factor sand they are able to just be who they are instead of being "one of the triplets." All three kids have been in different classes year to year.

Woman Gives Birth To 2nd Set of Naturally-Conceived Triplets

"We'll just make do. We always have..."

That's what Tilm Lasita said when he was asked how she was going to care for the newborn triplets he and his wife Victoria (39) conceived without drugs, and gave birth to last week. The triplets that followed hot on the heels of their first set of triplets, born three years ago, also conceived without drugs. The double triplets are the latest addition to the Lasita clan, which includes three twentysomething sons, who probably are using drugs, just to stay sane in Tripletville. (I know I would be.) Are you staying on top of all these numbers? Because I'm not. They lost me at "conceived without drugs."

Congratulations to the Lasita family... and good luck! (You're gonna need it.)

Fertility Technology: Going Too Far?

You may have heard yesterday's edition of NPR's All Things Considered for an interview with author Liza Mundy who wrote the book Everything Conceivable, which takes a hard look at the multibillion-dollar fertility industry, paying special attention to the huge number of decisions couples are forced to make, especially the heart-wrenching one that no one talks about—the decision to reduce a multiple pregnancy.

There's been a huge rise in multiple births lately, due in large part to the increased incidence of in vitro fertilization. Twin births are now a 1 in 33 occurrence. While that make some go all warm and fuzzy inside, thinking of matching Doublemint outfits, apparently there's a dark side of multiple births that no one seems to talk about.

To start with, many multiple births are also premature births. The health risks of preemies are huge (one third of infant deaths are due to prematurity), not to mention the enormous costs in health care for these little guys. The average cost of a triplet birth is more than $500,000. Cerebral palsy is on the rise, since the result of prematurity and its frequent companion, low birth weight, results in higher incidence of CP—six times more likely for twins, and twenty times more likely for triplets than in singleton births.

The thing that really got me was the increase, among multiple births, of postnatal death. Heartbreakingly, one in 15 twins die within a year after birth. That's absolutely horrible. And worse, for triplets it's almost one in 5.

Even knowing all those risks, I can understand why desperate parents-to-be take them. But Liza Mundy says that technological advances in fertility are pushing a woman's natural reproductive system too far, and that fertility doctors should be more forthcoming about the risks with their patients. I imagine there's a fine line involved.

Recipe For Lots of Babies at Once

Deja vu: In case you missed it, the rate of multiple births (that would be twins, triplets, or more) has gone waaaay up in the last few decades. According to this article, the odds of having twins today is 1 in 31, while it was 1 in 89 in 1980. Between 1980 and 1998, the rate of triplets or more went up 400 percent. By the way, in 1980, the odds of a woman hobbling into the delivery room on Candies was 1 in 12, and today it is 1 in 3,000.

What could possibly account for the overall rise in multiple births? It's either "something in the water" or the increase in the use of fertility drugs. So say you want a nice matching set of babies. What can you do to sign up for the two (or more)-for-one special?

Well, take there's the fertility drugs, but you can also increase your chances if you wait until you are over 35 to get pregnant. Tall and large women are more likely to have twins, as are those who have twins in their family or who already have one set. African American women have better odds of twins, and your chances also rise the more times you've been pregnant. Now go forth and multiply!

In Shrek The Third, due in theaters May 18, the gruff-but-lovable ogre gets more than he bargained for, when Princess Fiona gives birth to triplets! Dreamworks unveiled the official family portrait today (right). Awwwwww!

Director Chris Miller called Shrek and Fiona's progeny "the next logical step," in the story that started with the couple meeting and marrying in the original Shrek, and fighting to save their marriage in Shrek 2. The adventure continues later this month, with Shrek being groomed to take over the kingdom of Far Far Away. Hey, with three newborns at home, I'd be looking for a better day job, too.

Parents of Triplets Spend a lot of Time Driving Kids Around

Okay, the story isn't really about driving the triplets around. It is about how these three 15 year old siblings are very athletic, and how the two boys are active in golf and basketball and the girl triplet is very involved in dance. I just read the story and felt sorry for their parents. Those poor people must be freaking exhausted. Despite the high cost of car insurance for three sixteen year olds I bet they are counting the days until the kids can drive and they don't have to spend all of their free time toting someone to some sort of practice.

If you didn't already know, you would have guessed I have multiples too. I only have twins, but I am scared to death of the part when my kids are old enough to each be involved in different sports and music lessons and sleepovers and all that stuff that will involve me hauling my kids all over the place. Did I mention I live in one of the most congested metropolitan areas in the United States? It is going to be awesome.

Is it wrong to hope my kids are lazy teenagers? Or at least be involved in the same activities? Or maybe you guys could all pray that D.C. goes wireless by 2012. Then at least I will be able to do this in the car.

UK Mom Delivers Twins and Triplets in Twelve Month Span

What the sweet fancy Jesus is in the water in England? First there was this, which nearly made my single uterus shrivel up of its own accord. Now there's Rachel Reidford, who recently gave birth to triplets only nine months after giving birth to twins.

Rachel was unaware of the twins' conception until it was discovered during a routine scan prior to gallstone removal. And as for the triplets, well, she thought there was only one. And also, that she was only a few weeks along: Rachel and her partner hadn't even told their families about the newest pregnancy when her water broke and she had to call an ambulance.

"The babies just kept coming and coming. I couldn't believe what was happening to me. It was the worst night of my life - and the best," Rachel told the Mirror. Rachel, 24, also has a six year old daughter from a previous relationship. Her 20-year-old partner, Ricky, missed the birth of Harry, the first triplet out of the gate, but arrived just in time to welcome Alfie and Billy.

Rachel told the Daily Mail that she is currently using injectable birth control, but plans to take a pregnancy test monthly just in case. "I'm considering sterilization", she says.
