And they’d like to keep it that way. In a day and age where kids of all ages are exceedingly tech savvy, the Girls Scouts of America does not approve of their troops utilizing technology to get ahead in the competitive world of cookie sales.

Eight-year-old Wild Freeborn (now that’s a name!) enlisted the aid of her web designer dad and posted a You Tube video to promote sales of her cookies to the general public of her home town of Asheville, North Carolina. Her goal was to sell 12,000 boxes so she could send her and her entire troop to Girl Scout summer camp.

After generating about 700 orders through this marketing strategy, the officials at Girl Scouts HQ asked that the ‘ad’ be taken down citing that it was a violation of their policies. There is a rule saying that a Girl Scout cannot directly sell via the internet but Wild and her dad did not think they were breaking any rules since they weren’t directly selling the cookies but just promoting the sale of them.

In response to the situation on the Today Show, Denise Pesich,a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts, said in regards to not utilizing the net, “There are good reasons for that,” she explained. “We want to make sure that whatever the girl is doing is integrated into the program that she’s studying, we want to make sure we are in the development stages of a technological platform that will integrate it and be fair and equitable for all girls. But more importantly, it’s girl safety at its core.” Matt Lauer asked, “Is it less safe to sell online than to go door to door in some communities?”

Her reply was that “When we sell door to door we always have adults accompanying girls,” she replied. “In this case, we have a very concerned father overseeing the process, and we know she’s relatively safe. But not in all cases is that true.”
Even though her marketing scheme was cut short, Wild is optimistic that she’ll be able to reach that 12,000 mark. And the Today show is willing to do their part with Matt Lauer saying that the crew would surely buy some boxes.

It’s a shame that the Girl Scouts aren’t embracing this tech savvy and very contemporary avenue of entrepreneurship. Do you think the Girl Scouts should have allowed this type of promotion or should cookie sales be strictly ‘off line’.

Source

Gangsta’ Muppets: 12 of the Best Kids Show/Rap Mash-Ups

This totally made my day.
We'll go back to making fun of The View's dingbat mom Sherri Shepherd after today. And also screeching at the TV screen over Elisabeth Hasselbeck's wisdoms.

But today, let's see if you can hold back the tears during Sherri's recounting of what Barack Obama's win means to her and her son and no more limitations.

(Though, we're also as incredulous as Barbara that it took her up until late last week to decide on a candidate). Now grab a tissue.

Also, don't forget to take a look at Hasselbeck's gracious acceptance of Obama's win.

Video: You Tube, ABCNews

Late Night Follies: McCain Screws Up; Biden Can't Spell

I got Palin-Couric-level squirms watching John McCain on David Letterman last night. Letterman asks what Bob Schieffer didn't dare in the debates. The best part -- we get to see the workings of McCain's mind. Should I lie? Shouldn't I?

He summarizes Palin's "palling around with terrorists" lines thusly: "There's millions of words said in politics." Wow. Cynical.

In other late-night talk show news, we've got Biden on Leno. Joe's seriously charming. Even if he can't spell. Or count. Whichever.

Imagine a toddler police officer or doctor. It’s adorable, but I wouldn’t want to give the kid an actual gun or scalpel. The folks in Mexico feel differently, and so they have introduced to the world the first mini matador. Michelito Lagravere is just 10 years old, and has already chalked up 60 kills in the ring.

But some people don’t think this is so cute.

In France, where Michelito has been performing, the French have been in uproar over this adolescent cow slayer. Although bull fighting does enjoy relative popularity in southern France, French animal rights groups have managed to cancel two of Michelito’s performances so far. Although the idea of a mini meat murderer is disturbing enough, not to mention the potential for danger to the lil’ shaver, it’s likely the French group is using less concerned about Michelito’s well being and rather using him as a pawn toward their larger concern of ending the cruel practice of bull fighting in general. If raising concerns over his welfare gets a few cows a stay of execution, so be it.

We don’t have anything like bull fighting in the US, but kids here get regularly sent out into the woods with a firearm to hunt some animal or another. Sure, a ten-year-old bullfighting is shocking. Howvere, no one blinks an eye when a seven year old wanders into the thicket with a shotgun. Or how about an eight-year old flying over a mountain side on a speeding ATV. What do you think; do we in America casually place our children in deadly situations in the name of sport?

When asked about the motivation, staffers for the show said it is common show policy to make financial contrubtions to former guests and hopeful future guests.

Where do I spew my bile first?

This brings up a few points in my mind:

1) Ah high school, how I miss it. Times sure have changed. Now that bullies have resources like MySpace and You Tube, kids can get ridiculed, battered and emotionally crushed without leaving the comfort of their homes. I don't want to date myself, but back in my day if someone wanted to destroy you socially they simply passed a rumor around school that you had herpes. Will it ever be so innocent again?

2) What's with the trend of video recording your crimes and posting them on You Tube? Maybe it's the era of the reality show seen to its only logical conclusion. Fame is fame, right?

3) With this following fast on the heels on Dr. Phil's Ill-advised Brittany Spears intervention/publicity stunt, is it clear to everyone now that this guy, or at least his show, is bottom-feeding? Oh, and he drives a $250,000 Lamborghini. Get over that!

The instructor was unquestionably pro-drug-free labors. So, in addition to going over all the anatomy charts and talking about our fears and how we handle pain, etc., we also watched a ton of birth movies. Tons and tons and tons. Her goal was to bore the fear out of us, I think. In fact, by the end of the six weeks, we'd seen birth from all angles -- you know, except the angle of actually experiencing it, which by then felt a little beside the point.

There was one video in particular, shot some time in the early 80s judging from the hair/hiked up jeans on the dad, that really stuck with me. The woman was so calm and checked out and focused on the birth. She didn't even mind writhing around naked with her legs wide open during her minister's quick visit to say "hi." She kind of got on my nerves.

While I was laboring and eventually pushing out my first kid, I thought of this woman. I reasoned that if this insane preacher-flasher could stay calm and have a baby, so could I. And I did!

But since nobody goes to childbirth classes anymore, I'll give you a YouTube version of mine -- it's not me, she's reaching the level of calm like I tried to and like the 80s mom did. I've come across some others with laboring women who are just as calm -- no, calmer! -- than my inspiring/annoying laborer. You won't want to watch them at work, as the camera captures EV.ER.Y.THING. Happy labors!

Manchester United Recruits 9 Year Old

Remember when Freddy Adu started playing for DC United when he was only 14 years old?
The first time someone who thought I should be exposed to opera played me Bizet's Carmen, I immediately had a serious flashback. I felt warm and comfy and citrus-y. "Daisies and rubber bands?" I thought. Of course I was reliving this wonderful bit from Sesame Street.

I love the kitchen collaboration to make a perfect diva, and my favorite part is that stretch of a high note. I wonder if Maria Callas' face ever flew in the air when she sang?

There's a long list of things I can't handle now that I'm a parent. News stories about abused or kidnapped children. Movies like Babel. Books that have a child death as a plot device. Shoot, Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" could send me into a tailspin now.

But you know what tops that list? Nature shows. Because the circle of life often involves baby animals being eaten. Yeah, yeah, it's a wild kingdom out there, but I don't care. I'm content to be a wussy.

So I got all choked up when I watched this video via So Close about lions and a croc fighting over a baby buffalo. It reminded me too much of sending my kid to kindergarten. But then, the buffalos form a posse, and...well, check out what happens. Don't mess with a buffalo baby!

So sue me. I read the first book; I get the idea. But in the grand tradition of songs that will remain forever stuck in your head (you can thank me now), I bring you....Potter Puppet Pals:

Here's the moronic question of the day: Does YouTube count as TV? The American Pediatrics People Who Don't Enjoy Fun, or whatever the acronym is, say kids shouldn't watch any TV until they're two. But how about an occasional YouTube clip?

Dana was sick this morning, and Emmeline was bouncing off the walls, so I sat her on my lap and forced her to watch two clips or Bert and Ernie. She was mesmerized. But then I started to feel guilty. We don't let her watch TV at all, but there she was -- watching what amounted to TV, albeit a smaller version that is more personalized and contains no commercials.

So what's the answer -- and please, please, please don't get me "anything in moderation."

You Tube Goodness: Father's Day Tribute

Nope, it's not too soon to be thinking about Father's Day, at least
not if you're Seattle-area Internet company Efinancial.com, which has
put together a video tribute of dads and daughters from across America
(some, apparently, from the 1970's!). WARNING: SACCHARINE ALERT!! If you have an allergic
reaction to sweeteners, you may find this a little sappy for your taste, and
you may wish to replace the soundtrack of "Daddy's Little Girl" sung by
R&B
recording artist E. Walter Smith and American Idol contestant Tatiana
McConnico with something more to your liking, but all in all there are
some moving images here of dads and their little girls.
