&lt;p&gt;I'm no fan of McCain and certainly no fan of domestic violence jokes, but he wasn't making a joke. &amp;nbsp;He was (mis)quoting a well-known legal punchline. &amp;nbsp;The story goes that a man is asked while testifying &amp;quot;When did you stop beating your wife?,&amp;quot; and, of course, there is no way for the man to answer that question without incriminating himself. &amp;nbsp;McCain was referencing that old well-known story as a way of stating that he couldn't answer the reporters' questions about Gibbons. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
