Q's Mom, Thanks for the clarification! But I think the fact that he was using a rhetorical line poking fun at domestic violence in order to avoid answering a question related to sexual assault is just slimy to say the least. And I'm certainly not the only one to miss the slightly obscure reference. ABC just wrote about the awkwardness of his "joke:: blogs.abcnews.com/.../mccain-gambles.html.

I'm no fan of McCain and certainly no fan of domestic violence jokes, but he wasn't making a joke. He was (mis)quoting a well-known legal punchline. The story goes that a man is asked while testifying "When did you stop beating your wife?," and, of course, there is no way for the man to answer that question without incriminating himself. McCain was referencing that old well-known story as a way of stating that he couldn't answer the reporters' questions about Gibbons.
