Yeah, I'm voting against the flexibility thing, although I do have reduced hours. I think it's because we're a consumption culture. Look at our cars, our homes, our credit card debt. We live to excess, including the size of our families (for the record, I drive a truck, I have cc debt, but the house is small, and we're only on the 1st of 2 kids).

We are a big nation and we feel we have the room (physically and metaphorically) to partake of out manifest destiny. It's the American spirit.

I don't think it's actually easier for moms in the US. I think we're just more used to thinking that we can have whatever we want, and that things will work out ok so long as we do our best.
