I think it's because we're a consumption culture. Look at our cars, our homes, our credit card debt. We live to excess, including the size of our families (for the record, I drive a truck, I have cc debt, but the house is small, and we're only on the 1st of 2 kids).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We are a big nation and we feel we have the room (physically and metaphorically) to partake of out manifest destiny. It's the American spirit.&lt;/p&gt;
