Fortunately, most little kids are pretty cute (probably an evolutionary development to make sure we keep 'em around), so you rarely have to lie. But anyone who asks you to tell them how cute their baby is needs to shut up.

I tell my godson he looked like Templeton the rat from Charlotte's Web, the cartoon not the recent movie, when he was born. His face was pointy and rat-like. He's 12 and can appreciate the humor, not to mention the fact that he is much better looking now. :-)

all three of mine looked like weird old man aliens as newborns. all the way until about 9 months. i would never tell them that and i think they're all beautiful now, but geez..i've got some unfortunate genes for a poor newborn.

i would also never tell someone they're baby was ugly. thats just rude. all babies are cute in some sort of way.

I'm with you all the way here - including the speculation about KC's demise at CBS. Except maybe the part about Bea Arthur - maybe she was gorgeous at three? Who knows?? Anyway. The most nauseating (in my opinion) is the relatively attractive former cheerleader mom who raves about her daughter's looks, waiting - just waiting - for the onlookers to declare how much that little blondie resembles momma. Then comes the predictable, "Oooohh, really? Do you think so??? Oooohhh I hope so!" Gag. My very dear friend pointed out that she feels she can brag about her son's looks (and he IS objectively handsome) because he's not biologically related to her so it's not like she's looking for props for herself. Funny. I do give her a bit more of a pass than some - just giving her creative rationalization points, I guess.
