My dad remarried after divorcing my mom, and he and his new wife hyphenated, both, but her daughter was hypenated from her previous marriage- basically, everyone had different names and it was totally confusing and bizarre (and fun?). I like the idea of everyone having their own last name. You know, like "Rainbow big Cloud" or something.

As for Portia taking Ellen's name I think it's a beautiful dispaly of love and committment. When my partner and I were planning our committment ceremony we discussed names. At first we were going to hyphenate but our names didnt go together very well so we created a new name using part of hers and part of mine and we changed our surnames by deed poll.

I get a long lecture and reading assignments for asking why it's rude to ask my lesbian friends which one is going to be Mama and which is going to be Mommy, but this guy gets nada for saying 'I guess we know who's the man!'

unbelievable.
