Andréane! I would like to get in touch with Tracy since the same thing happened to me on April of this year.It was my second child and St. Mary Hospital sent me back home althought I was 3cm dilated and was having contractions 5 min apart. WHen we were heading back home my contractions got more intense. We got home but had to get back to the car right away to drive bakc to the hospital. I gave birth to my daughter in my brother's car on the passenger seat about 3 minutes before we reached the Hospital. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and I couldn't even do anything or think straight since my body was trembling as if I was having a seizure. My brother was freaking out (thank God he didn't have an accident!) Needless to say he couldn't really assist me. To make matters worse when I got my daughter back some 8 hours later her arm had a bruise as if she had a fingernail scratch or a burn. And when I got my Declaration of Birth papers they had inscribed that my daughter was born at their premise and they even put some doctor's name I have never heard of as the one who had assisted me during labor!!!! Tracy is my neighbour. The worst in her story is that her doctor had told her she was supposed to have a c-section. Can you imagine what would have happend if the baby arrived feet first, on her St-Michel, bathroom floor?

I gave birth in a different Canadian hospital. By the time we got the go-ahead (our second phone call to the maternity service) to go to the hospital, my contractions were so strong and frequent that I could barely walk to the car. When we arrived at the hospital, I was 7 cm dilated. We waited because we'd been warned in prenatal classes that we'd be sent home if we went in 'too early'.

My labour started when my water broke, 12 hours before we went to the hospital. Again, we were told at the prenatal class that hardly anyone's water broke until well into labour (yet every single one of my friends has had her water break at the start of labour), and even if it did break, there was no reason to go to the hospital and we'd be turned away if I wasn't in active labour.

I know a lovely lady who was sent home during labor with her first child. She returned the next day and delivered a gorgeous, full term, still born child who had compressed the cord as she descended into the birth canal.

and <em> that </em> is why i got a doula and a midwife and gave birth in my bedroom. because if doctors and nurses think that i am wasting their time, then they are a waste of my time.

After schlepping to the hospital at midnight I received a kind lecture from the nurses on how to tell I was in real labor, and then I was sent home. Later that day I got another kind lecture from my doctor about not rushing to the hospital for every twinge. My labor began as I left his office but I was too embarrassed to turn back so I went home and endured it for twelve hours before heading back to the hospital, where they confirmed that I was now in labor and let me stay.

At my hospital, they told me I had to stay once my water broke due to risk of infection.

I went to the hospital 9 hours after my water broke, and if I had been dilated less than 5cm they would have sent me home. You only have to be in the hospital if you're strep B positive.
