Lets get the other side in here. I'm 16, and I can tell you right now that my parents installing a camera in my car would piss me off an insane amount. It shows that they have absolutely no trust whatsoever. I'm actually not a bad driver. I still have things to learn, but I'm a good kid, and I'm not reckless. To tell you the truth, when that thing got installed, the first thing I would do was either break it or take it out. That's an incredible invasion of privacy, and I just wouldn't take it. Maybe I would understand for someone who had been in an accident before, but I'm a decent driver, I don't deserve that, just like most other young drivers don't deserve that.

Oh gaw, Ivy, I had the same thought! There are thousands of overly anxious teenagers out there who've just been screwed out of their chance to lose to their virginity...and by a camera. What a damn shame.

I say BRING IT ON!!!!! If it makes my kid think twice before putting 12 people in a 7 passenger vehicle, driving 60 in a 30 mph zone while steering with his knees, I'm all for it. And as far as no back seat action---good for him!!!! I don't wanna be a granny before I'm 40 anyway!!!!!

I think we should be as respectful of our kids as possible, but there is no absolute "right to privacy" as far as my kids are concerned. Children and teenagers are immature and make dumb, uninformed decisions -- it's my job as a parent to, within reason, know what's going on with them at all times.

That said, I don't think I would install a device like this without some sort of provocation -- it seems the dad in the story was very aware his son was a reckless driver, so he took a (perhaps drastic) measure to keep his son safe. What's wrong with that?

Isn't there some kind of "black box" one can install without the kid knowing? I am sure I'm not making that up and I would do that before I would put a camera in there.

I didn't get my license until I was 22, so I was never a teen driver. I rode shotgun often enough, though.
