I don't remember where I read this, but there was a study, long ago, which reported that the offended spouse in a cheating relationship almost always blames herself (himself), and seems to focus 'it was my fault, but what did I do wrong?'.

I would bet anything that Elizabeth blamed herself and if she did cover it up, it was to protect John's future from her weakness (cancer). But, for whatever reason, the press, and blog sheets, need stories like this to feed the frenzy, because showing a little compassion just doesn't seem to sell well any more.

Yeah, I know, here I am stirring the pot, also.

I'm so sick of people confusing personal with political. Yeah, John Edwards is a cheating bastard. So are so many other politicians...and the other tens of thousands of people in this country who are cheating RIGHT this minute. Like usual, the media is crossing their boundaries. And please lets leave Elizabeth be. Her decisions are hers alone and she has every right to decide to keep her personal life just that - PERSONAL!

beyond the fact that no one actually knows what happens in a relationship besides the two people involved in it, what appallingly bad taste to pin this on elizabeth edwards. it was in no way her responsibility to break this on the public. it's possible her husband is a slick slimeball, but this seems to a sort of trend, as noted in other articles about political couples - the clintons, the spitzers, the sarcozys, et al - that the wife was either a ballbuster or too passive or manipulative, and that in any case, this was THEIR fault, in a roundabout way. i'm with mamallama. stick with the real news, and leave this alone.

The blame lays squarely on John Edwards and Rielle Hunter. Elizabeth is the victim in this and she should hardly be expected to consider her husband's political ramifications at a time when her world surely felt as if it was falling apart. Give her a break! CNN should focus on the issues of Georgia/Russia and the horrible conditions in Darfur and the list of real atrocities that just goes on and on.

Here's the thing. A wife cannot be compelled to testify against her husband in a court of law. Why would she be expected to do so in the court of public opinion?

I see what you're saying and it does sound rotten - but here's the thing... It's not her fault it happened but she should have discouraged him from running or found a way to leak the story early. It's not about political capital, it's about political reality. He was going to get found out and if he had been found out after he secured the nomination, it would have as good as handed to the election to the Republicans.

That's the problem.
