There's not a lot of ocean between Winnipeg and Regina or Toronto and Montreal. Seriously though, if you are crash-landing into the ocean, I would think surviving the crash and the hypothermia would be a little more pressing than a life jacket vs flotation device problem. &lt;/p&gt;

We Canadians also think it's ridiculous... 50 pounds? That's gotta have a HUGE impact on the price of a fuel tank, right?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I've never flown Jazz, but Air Canada, its parent company, is usually pretty good. This made the news but I'm sure there are probably loads of other smaller companies out there that somewhat cut maintenance/safety corners. I mean, airlines prices have become so low compared to even a few years ago... When you think of it, they had to have let some things go, and I don't think it's the the stale sandwiches they use to hand out that has the biggest impact on costs.&lt;/p&gt;
