He's actually pretty lucky that he wasn't shot. I know a lot of people who would have shot first, asked questions later, after seeing a strange, bedraggled man in their child's bed. My grandma once shot at an intruder in her home. He escaped unharmed, however. My point is that it's pretty cool that the father didn't just shoot the guy and waited for the police to come.

I kind of feel sorry for the guy. He's probably off his meds or something. Even though I would have been totally horrified had I been the person to find him in my kids bed, I do think it sounds more like the guy needs his caseworker and his meds than jail (that's only knowing what I've read, of course).

Yeah, I should have started my post at the second line; it isn't the mother's fault at all. I'd certainly freak if I found a mentally ill person in my daughter's bed, but there just HAS to be a better solution than "lock 'em up" for these troubled people.

My husband and I recently had an elderly man with advanced Alzheimer's come to our door in the middle of the night, confusing and wanting to sleep on our couch. We were horrified to find that calling the police was literally our only option. (Fortunately they knew him and were able to return him to his group home, but we were terrified that by calling the police, we'd be sending this sweet old man to jail for the night.)

Sorry Knitty - It seemed like you were blaming that on the mom for "not locking her door." On the other hand, yes, you're right - society has a long way to go in how it treats the mentally ill. I can have compassion . . . but it doesn't mean I'd invite the guy to sleep in my kid's bed.

And that wasn't even my point. Whether he used a crowbar or simply walked in the front door, he was trespassing. He shouldn't have been there. No one is going to argue that.

My point is that he is clearly mentally ill and deserving of sympathy. No one chooses to be mentally ill, as a country we should have resources available for their care aside from "wait until they commit a crime, then lock them up in jail."

Well, Jeanne, I guess the part that I saw was the ALLEGEDLY. You know, the part that needs to be proven? In a court of law? Or at least it did in the country I grew up in.

Here's an idea: maybe mom should just lock her goddamn door and be done with it. Like it or not, the mentally ill are part of our society, and jail really isn't the ideal place for them. Of course, there is no ideal place for them here, because our government only had the funds to bail out crooks on Wall Street. This man is likely a veteran, but to hell with him... here in the US, we have neither funds for his care nor sympathy for his plight.
