(Dude, Charles Manson called. He wants his look back.) I know a lot of people who would have shot first, asked questions later, after seeing a strange, bedraggled man in their child's bed. My grandma once shot at an intruder in her home. He escaped unharmed, however. My point is that it's pretty cool that the father didn't just shoot the guy and waited for the police to come.

My husband and I recently had an elderly man with advanced Alzheimer's come to our door in the middle of the night, confusing and wanting to sleep on our couch. We were horrified to find that calling the police was literally our only option. (Fortunately they knew him and were able to return him to his group home, but we were terrified that by calling the police, we'd be sending this sweet old man to jail for the night.)

I can have compassion . . . but it doesn't mean I'd invite the guy to sleep in my kid's bed.

My point is that he is clearly mentally ill and deserving of sympathy. No one chooses to be mentally ill, as a country we should have resources available for their care aside from "wait until they commit a crime, then lock them up in jail."
