My boyfriend, Michael, who is of Hungarian descent, came dangerously close to being names Zoltan. I can't tell you how glad I am that didn't happen.

I don't have any children but a friend was in the process of adopting and before the baby was born they weren't sure 100% if the birth mother would go through with it - so rather than announce the name and open themselves up for disappointment they kept calling their soon-to-be-child "Hester Willa". That way if the birth mother changed her mind they could just say "Well, she wasn't our Hester Willa".

Anyway, my friends great-aunt got wind of the baby's name and send them such a sweet card congratulating them and saying that it was wonderful they picked such a strong New England name for their child... it was with a great sigh of relief that they confirmed the adoption and announced the baby's real name.

Don't share your picks with anyone - they will try to influence you and it is your unique privilege to name this new life.

We didn't use Malcom, you could have that one. Or Troy, I've always liked Troys. And then you can make jokes about "the battle of..." Tully was Cicero's nickname, but we've already used it.

And congratulations! Hope you don't break the 12 pound barrier this time...

I was really pulling for the name Hugo for our son. I lost the battle before it even began.

One interesting piece of advice I got from a friend during our first pregnancy. As we pondered names for a girl the entire family weighed in. My mom liked this one, but her mom hated it. Everybody hates the one Nicole and I love. So the advice was this. Think up a terrible name for your kid. Announce it and stand by it no matter how much crap your family gives you. Than on the day of the birth reveal the real name you chose. No matter what it is, everyone will just be relieved you didn't go with "Gordonia".

Want to know the real difference between heritage and hate? Suggesting you name your kid Jedediah, Billy Bob or Jefferson Davis is just hateful!

We had a list of names and we had decided to choose one from the list after seeing him. We thought once we saw him, clouds would part and music would play and the perfect name would be pronounced by the gods. The name that came to us when we first saw him was "Hans Moleman" from The Simpsons. So yeah, we went with my husband's middle name instead.

My first baby was born 6 years ago today. We chose her name months before we knew we were having a girl because my husband dreamed it was a girl. I dont believe in waiting to see the child first. Their appearance changes so much in the first year. Besides, its not a puppy.

Sympathy! We had our first son named within the first trimester. But the second was only finalized when we were filling out the paperwork before getting booted from the hospital on the third day.

In the last weeks of the pregnancy, it got a little frantic. One checker at the grocery store asked whether we had picked a name. I said no, and asked if she knew any good ones. She said her grandson's name was Adrian. I went home to my husband and said, "I've got the perfect name!" He agreed. But the next day, we didn't like it anymore... that flip-flopping happened more than once. (Noah, Nathan, Marcel...) Good luck!

We picked a name that was our choice for either a boy or a girl, and just had middle names that were different. It solved a lot of problems.

I don't have a last minute story though. Since my husband and I have been together since we were 16 (5 years now?!) we planned out six names for any children we have. Three boy names and three girl names, and yes...we even had the middle picked out. We hashed over each one trying to figure out ways it could be turned into an insult, made fun of, and the like. Lord knows I had so much grief for my last name...though I loved it because it was at the end of the alphabet.

Hmm, but since it was already picked when we found out we were having a boy there was Damien Draakus all ready for the first born son. ^^ Though we've cooled on the girl names except for the first one; Zuria Rose. Can't wait to have another boy so he can be Dante Virgil. Eee, we love that one because it's actually the names of the twins in Devil May Cry...my husband's favorite game. Okay, I'll stop. But the site we used to find the names is the same one I use for writing and it's really awesome.

20000-names.com; It has them listed by country of origin, and even has multiple lists just by meaning like say...names that mean beautiful, dark, evil, flower, mythological. ^^ So good luck!

We were sure our #4 was a boy but we had a girls name picked out (you know, in case the impossible happened) When our darling daughter was born we said "Penelope?, Nah." and we named her after a pop song instead. So we have a Delilah now.

We waited until right before my c-section to name our son, but he came very early, so we thought we had more time! We'd only known he was a boy for four weeks, and had had a girl's name picked for years.

If I had a boy alone, I'd name him David. My husband's previous girlfriend had a son from a prior relationship named David, though, so that's immediately off of our list. You can have it, with my blessing.

We had two full names ready and waiting...and then we waited until she was born to try both names out...and she sneezed when we said the second combination...so that one won.

And now thinking back on it...I can't imagine her with the other name...and I also can't imagine recycling the leftover name for kid number 2...so I guess the agony will have to begin again.

Oh DUDE. I have Polish heritage and for one thing not a person in my grandmother's family went by their actual name, secondly the names were along the lines of Czeschu and Stanley -- which my father was angling for for all five of his grandchildren.
