I went to school with a Sunshine and a Fashun. And about fourteen Angela/Angie people and about twenty-six Jennifers.

I was the only Rachel, but I have a cousin named Rachelle and we have the same last name and we lived in the same town growing up. We went to different schools: she to a kookoopants Christian school and me to the local public, but it was still a pain in the ass for both of us.

I'm hoping that Jillian will be the only one of her kind when she starts school, but given my luck, she'll be one of six.

There's nothing wrong with having a whole bunch of kids with the same name, unless that name is Nevaeh, backwards heaven. Or my fave, first name Tirsa, middle name Joy, get it tears of joy? I'd prefer every little boy is named Nathan than parents naming their child after their favorite alcohol. At least Nathan is a name, a real name, not something made up of the words lemon jello and orange jello. Twins named Lemongelo and Orangelo. I'm not making this up, those are real kids. What's the weirdest, random baby name you know? Mine is actually Deshantatar. BTW my little boys name is Ben, second choice. First choice was Finn

I think people need to think outside the box when they consider names. or find a really unique middle name. Our son's middle name is danger. Silly enough to be fun, but easy to hide if he hates it.

My girls' names are of the 1800's variety, too... but even the outdated-to-the-point-of-near-oblivion names are not safe anymore. Unless you like names like Phyllis, Mortimer, Mildred, Horace...

Not that there's anything wrong with those names.. it just takes a special kid to render a name like "Horace" cool. Or even acceptable.

Karen, I know how you feel with Jessica... we fell victim to the Olivia trend. I seriously had not heard of or known a single Olivia except for Newton-John back in 1996...turns out the name was on a decided upswing.

When you're expecting your first, it's hard to know what's really all the rage...unless ypu have tons of friends with little ones, the trends are just under the radar.

Even now: My son was born 2 months ago, and we named him Archer. I discovered Babble a few weeks after he was born, and who did I read about in Rebecca Wolf's blog? Another Archer, to which my response was "No EFFING way!"

You just never know!

Ty, in 1984 there was no internet to check the popular-name lists. I was young and poor and had few resources; a baby-name book had this cool "new" name that was billed as having come from "The Merchant of Venice" and I thought that naming a kid after Shakespeare was cool. It was a different world then. Not having other kids in school or being around other couples-with-kids, living in a tiny town, how would I know? Don't judge unless you've been there.

I really don't want to sound rude here, but how do you not realize how popular certain names, like Mathew and Jessica, are, before you decide on a name for your child? Before you are even pregnant or planning to adopt? Assuming that you've lived in the US for much of your life.

I've met other people who have named their kids Mathew and they too thought that the name was beautiful and unique. And while its really lovely .... I can't even count the number of Mathews and Matts that I've met in my lifetime.

I don't think that a name should necessarily be uncommon, but at the same time, I don't know how you could not notice ubiquitous names like that.

I actually have decided that names on the Soc Sec top 10 list are not to be considored when naming my kids. But, honestly, that is a really silly rule considoring that I really do like a few of the names.

I thought Nathan was too popular too. That's why I added on the oh so popular "iel" ending. Too bad for me his preschool teachers don't want to remember the "iel" ending and have convinced my lil guy his name is Nathan anyway.

I thought I was being so radical with my oldest son's name---Matthew. Too stupid was I at the time to check the SS name list. It was the top name of that year. My son thought his first name was Matt G. till he was in 3rd grade.

And then we thought Quinn was a cool name. Cool enough to name our youngest Quinn. Sure I had heard it before, but not often. He's the first of 5 Quinns born to women in my church's moms group.

I quit after #3.

Tell that to Jessica S., Jessica T., and Jessica D., not to mention Jess and other Jess.

(And there were 4 Karens in my 4th grade class.)

My other children's names aren't quite on the radar.
