AllisonWonder, I might suggest going through a nanny service in your case. They do background checks and credit screenings, plus they send personal references with the sitters. It costs a bit more, sometimes a flat fee and sometimes a percentage of the sitter's salary. We've used them successfully in two different towns where we didn't know anyone. Most of the time you can google your town and nanny service or sitter service. Good luck!

This IS a nightmare.

We just moved to a new town where we don't really know anyone, and I don't know how we're going to find a babysitter. We wouldn't even know any of the people who were giving references...

And yeah, 30 years isn't enough.

Ugh, reading that makes me sick. I have terrible fear of something happening to my son if I leave him alone with a sitter, which is why I have only left my son in the care of my mother or sister. I feel slightly ashamed typing this, but if I ever decide to hire a babysitter, it will be a woman. I know that there are female child molesters out there, but I would just never feel comfortable letting a man babysit for my child.

30 years isnt enough. Most sex offenders (esp crimes of THIS NATURE) reoffend- even murder
