I have a 0 tolerance for drunk driving. I have lost a family member due to being hit by one.

I do stand by teen parents, I know a few, they have it hard but they basicly did it to themselves (they made the choice to do the act).

I am all for breastfeeding, I do it.

I am a car seat nut (I drive my family nuts because I have done extensive research and practice extended rear facing and extended harnessing).

I grew up in a home with an alcoholic parent who abused us and refused to continue the cycle. I rarely drink and if anything am to soft on my kids.

This teen did a horible thing and yes she needs help but she needs to know it was wrong and be punished. She could have killed herself, her child, the officer and any person who happened to be on the street at the time.

Katlady500--just to clear something up. A small amount of beer to you is a larger amount to an infant, because of their small body weight. Ex: a 12 pound baby is one tenth the weight of a 120 pound mother, thus a "tenth of a beer" is like a whole beer to them.

The rule of thumb is that the nursing infant's blood alcohol level mirrors that of the mother. If the mother is intoxicated, then an infant who nurses while she is intoxicated will also likely be intoxicated.

That said, I do agree that driving with an unrestrained infant is definitely the worst offense.

I would say B... Katlady500 pointed out that the effect of the beer on the baby is not that great (still dangerous, but not likely to kill her if this was the first time). And I would be willing to bet if she had crashed, the baby wouldn't have lived through it.

And Lizzie, not one person said anything about her social status. And frankly if she didn't want people to judge her, then I guess she shouldn't have acted so stupidly. As for you, I would suggest that you get down off your high horse and re check your own work.

Before you all pour forth your "holier than thou" smug middle class bile, has any one, including this blogger bothered to do some investigation into the case and find out what this young woman's social status is?

Perhaps she an indigenous woman possibly attempting to cope with a baby in a difficult or unsupportive situation, where alcohol is very prevalent.

There is no doubt this is a very sad case, and that the baby was in terrible danger. There is no doubt that this young woman was irresponsible in the extreme. But there is also no doubt that she needs help. Young mothers especially in remote areas need education, and support.

Also the town is called Alice Springs, not Spring.

Accuracy might give your opinions a little more credence.

Luckily for the baby, the amount of alcohol in your breast milk mirrors your blood alcohol level. So, even if mom had an nearly lethal level of 0.2% that's not even the equivalent of a tenth of a weak beer. The baby was more likely to incur bodily harm by being handled by a drunken loser than to experience alcohol poisoning.
