I think it's a tone thing. It certainly sounds to me like the letter writer is being flippant and judgmental about the sahm's life, while getting weirdly paranoid (all moms are lying to her?). I think it's possible to wonder without coming across as a giant brat.

but I certainly wondered such things before I had kids.

The writer isn't criticizing anyone's choice. She is just having trouble figuring out why her friend isn't calling her back.

Seriously, if the letter-writer thinks that taking a young child to the park is relaxing, she needs to borrow her friend's kid for the afternoon and try it.

I have to think the original questioner's friend isn't emailing her or calling her back b/c she's sick of the snarking and judging, among other reasons.

Most days I haven't a g-d clue what I accomplished that day. Most days are like that come to think of it. I'm glad somebody took the time to list the various (no)things we do. Bless that Carolyn what's her face. (I also don't have time to read papers).

Wow. Normally, Carolyn Hax and her "advice" rub me the wrong way, but occasionally she is spot-on, and this is one of those times. My husband asked me that question exactly once, and it's a testament to the strength of our marriage that he actually sat through my 15-minute answer, complete with interpretive dance.

She also forgot to mention the hour or so spent in the bathroom, trying to get the little one(s) to "go", then getting them to wash their hands, then stop washing their hands and stop wasting water! I can't believe how time-consuming that can be!!
