O.K. I don't think that Samantha put it the correct framing, but I agree with her sentiment--it's a COSTUME folks. First, probably if parents helped their kids make their costumes and quit buying this stuff, it would go away 'cause there would be no $$ in making and marketing it. Second, I doubt if any kid is going to be permanently warped if they go out Trick-or-Treating dressed as a Bratz character--my son dressed up as a girl one year and it didn't wreck him. Third (and, to me, most important) don't forget that if boys' brains are "150% penis brainpower" then the parents of said boys have a responsibility to teach their sons that dress is not an indication of a girls moral inclinations, any more than athletic shorts and no shirt are an indication of a boys.

Apparently, lots of parents (and wicked hags?) are worried about this trend. We've been getting a lot of traffic recently from Google searches with search words like "feminist Halloween outfits kids" and the like. So I tried to think of some good outfits that people could pull together themselves (because, really, for me half the Halloween fun is robbed if I can't go through the creative process of inventing my costume from scratch). I came up with Hermione, Marie Curie, Amelia Earhart, Billie Holiday, and Janis Joplin. I feel like I need to come up with some more ideas, though.

I wrote about this exact same thing last year when getting a costume for my daughter. I literally wanted to throw-up seeing the crap costumes the sell for girls.

And it's WORSE for the tween and teenage set!!!

I wonder what kind of parents allow this? Moms DO NOT let your daughter's dress like that. You obviously do not understand how a teenage boys' mind works (it's 150% penis brainpower)

And those Dads allowing their daughter to dress like this should be arrested.

Personally, I find this entire article very disturbing. The skirts you are talking about are not too short- the Bratz costume skirt was at the knee, which is fine! You people must be oversheltering your kids- they will be exposed to this stuff anyway, and you dont seem to trust their sense of maturity at all! I work in a store that does HUGE business in Halloween, and all of us who work there are shocked by some of the costumes. We don't have Bratz or Hannah Montana, but the Barbie costumes for little girls are too slutty for me. And there's a line being marketed to tweens/ teens that is SO SLUTTY (impossibly short skirts, fishnets, major cleavage)... and they complain that "it's not sexy enough", and their parents just go along with it.

I was actually glad to find out that I'm having another boy because I won't have to deal with the sexification of little girls- we just have to teach them to respect women in a world that clearly doesn't.

My little girl isn't allowed to play with Bratz. I'm sick of the whore dolls and costumes, and even regular clothes meant for little girls, even little-little ones, like my 4yr old.

We went to Disney last month, and I could have puked. Itty bitty girls in their VERY bare-midriffed Ariel costumes. Preteen girls with their buttcheeks hanging out of their Daisy Dukes. I even saw one girl wearing what looked like spandex hotpants. These children were with their parents. WTF?

I was at a local arts and crafts fair a few weeks ago, and there was a dance competition on stage. There were these girls, ages 10-16, dressed in those same hotpants (they look like hipster panties) and cut-off shirts. Apparently, some of the girls were allowed to cut their own shirt, b/c some were cut clear up to "there". I was shocked.. and grossed out. Can you guess who was the most interested in this dance competition? Older men. There were all these men standing around watching this thing. I wanted to puke.

Atlas is obviously offended because he/she dresses their daughter inappropriately to keep up with the whore-y times.

Even women's costumes are this way. What happened to Halloween being about fun, scary stuff? Now it's all about sexuality & men dressing like perverts. I went through a local seasonal halloween costume shop the other day and it was all slutty costumes for women (and girls) and bad gyno/proctologist/plastic surgeon joke costumes for guys. Really depressing and horribly unimaginative.

Dude, it's no secret that Halloween has become (W)hore-o-ween for some time now (see "Mean Girls" movie, when they're referencing it in Disney-esce movies it's way mainstream) but to imply that the under girls the age of 7 have already decided to "slut it up" is beyond lame. For starters it's their parents who are encouraging it; and the parents of kids in who are that young, generally range in age from Gen Xers to the slackers who are got knocked up in high school 7 years ago, so that would make them around say 25. Let's say ages 25-40, even 50. You tell me, what generation do they all fit into?

Don't get me wrong, if you want to slut it up and you're an adult go for it. Well, go for it if you can pull it off, otherwise no one wants to see that. But to call us "hags" or "out of touch" or whatever term you want to use because we think it's inappropriate for children to dress in a "sexy" manner? I believe that makes you a very short step away from a having to registar as a sex offender. Honestly dude, you gross me out.

i *hate* shopping (including regular clothes shopping) for my little girl - the clothes are too "sexy" for a 7 yo. skirts (within reason) and shirts/blouses are okay, but the mid-driff tops and short mini skirts are a no-no.

if parents would stop buying it, then the manufacturers (sp?) would have to think twice about they clothes they peddle . . .

I am so wiht you on this and agree with Melissa. Here in Ontario, Canada we do not always have the warmest Halloweens and when we went shopping for my 4 year-old daughter I was shocked at the pirate outfits where the shirt was hanging off the shoulers...It does not help either that my 4 year-old needs a larger size because she is so tall for her age and costumes are made so small...and I have found since we had to go to kid sizes the options were drastically reduced in what they can be...Thankfully there are some creative people out there who have tons have homemade alternatives and are willingly to share their ideas

I just wrote a similar type post on my site this morning. I have three kids (two girls and a boy). I make their costumes each year so as not to have to deal with innapropriate choices. My youngest (2) is going as a witch, and her costume consists of a black tutu over a pair of leggings with a long-sleeved shirt. My oldest (8) wants to be a snow princess - she's getting a white tutu over a pair of pink sweatpants and a jeweled long-sleeve shirt (with fairy wings and a crown). Aside from the sluttiness of those costumes pictured, they are impractical for cold Halloween nights in NY. My son wants to be a vampire - he only cares about the fake teeth.
