I wish I knew Nerve Media's magic formula for instilling such loyalty in its writers. I mean, come on -- Babble has a corporate parent pulling in several million dollars in revenue a year, whose founder stated that he thinks Babble will be "wildly commercially successful", and us readers are to think that this is some indie magazine when I'm sure the phrase "revenue growth" is bandied about behind the scenes on a daily basis?

While the individual writers on this site may strive for something more, it's rather disingenuous to ignore that Babble itself is trying to establish a brand and a very specific target audience. I would bet a large sum of money that the word "hip" appears somewhere in their marketing plan. High level marketing execs, such as at Leo Burnett, are even praising Babble thusly (as quoted in the NYT piece about the site): “It’s a very valuable psychographic in that the urban hipster lifestyle is something that a lot of people aspire to, even if they don’t technically live it,” she said. “These are the kind of consumers advertisers want to reach in order to get a trend started that will then filter out to a broader audience.”
