Well I'm not ashamed to admit it. I like getting stuff for Mother's Day. I very rarely splurge on anything nice for myself so on Mother's Day he usually gets me something nice. The handmade cards that I know the kids have made me will be wonderful and I'll cherish them forever and all that jazz but I'm also looking forward to what my husband is going to give me. I'm materialistic like that.

Worst Mother's Day present? Gardening tools. I've never gardened in my life and I don't even plan to. I appreciated the effort and thought but it was still not a good gift.

Mother's Day, I've been enjoying it for 5 years now. My own son, and going on 3 years with a great boyfriend with 2 daughters of his own. Together we have quite the bunch. He calls my boyfriend dad, they call me mom. I spend Mother's day dining out, sleeping in, having the family clean the house for me, do the shopping, feed the cat, pay the bills....then I wake up and realize that I have 3 kids jumping on me to get them breakfast. That right there is the BEST gift anyone could give me! Knowing that I am fortunate enough to have 3 beautiful children who wreck my house, run to me when they get hurt, fly through the door when they get home from school and throw their backpacks in the middle of the living room, have me read to them, play with them, take walks with them, ask me advice, fight with each other, talk back and need me, is all the present that I need. I am a mother, my mother taught me very well, I love her very much, her mother taught her very well and we both love her very much. Now I am hoping that I can teach my children well and they will love me very much. No one is perfect, I'm bound to hear "I hate you!" more than once, but its the times that I hear "I love you" that makes it worthwhile. So on Mother's Day this Sunday when they come screaming in the bedroom at 7 a.m. begging for pancakes or oatmeal, I will gladly get up and do it all for them and in return? "I love you momma". The best present of all.

p.s.In addition, our elementary and preschool have had the children make delightful cards that they so thoughtfully hid from me because it is a surprise until Sunday. (They put them on my computer desk face down!)

Though, as a mom, I appreciate having my family give me that little extra bit of positive attention one day out of the year, I personally hate the whole 'Hallmark' feel that mother's day carries with it. Flowers, though beautiful, die. Chocolates, though tasty, will 'go to her thighs'. Wanna show mom you care? Make mom breakfast in bed! Let her take a bubble bath longer than 10 minutes. Take the kids out to play for a while and let mom curl up with a good book. Sometimes it's simple and uncostly acts that show mom you love her. It's her day. Not an excuse to earn brownie points.

I Think mom is a beautiful gift from a God, we all should proud for having a beautiful lady who is mom in our life. Also, I think a mom sacrifice all her life for the well being of her children. So, mom never expect any gift from her children but she expect love, affection, respect and sometime to spend with her children so that she can refresh her memories.

Mom wherever you live, I'll always with you and love you forever.

I never write anything in these chats, but I have to say, the best Mothers day gift is that my 11 1/2 daughter is so excited that we are going to spend the whole weekend together just her and I, she has been making plans and counting down the dates for weeks!

For Mother's Day my Mom takes the whole family out for breakfast.(she pays) That way she knows that she will see all of her kids grandkids and her mom on Mother's Day.

I love how the men all have negative things to say about this article. Soooo typical. Rachel, your writing is fine. If I wanted an article about the situation in Darfur, I wouldn't have come here. There has to be a balance. My neighbor buried her son two weeks ago. I know she'll never get what she wants for Mother's Day because she'll never get him back. I'm grateful for my children and my Mother, but still wish I could dazzle my mother with something I can't afford. Will she be disappointed? NO. Would she be thrilled if I could afford an Ipod for her? YES. Don't knock others out of your own guilt or inadequacy.

So, usually they guys who fight mother's day do not respect their mother or the mother of their children. No, Mother's day shouldn't be material but it should BE! I would love it if my husband and son got me anything. It doesn't even have to take money to do. And if you don't want to read this type of article here is a word of advice... DON'T... No one forced you to read it. Go on doing your donations which you more than likely don't do anyways.

You should honor your Mother and the Mother of your child in some way. Shame on you for judging others:(

wow some of you people are going crazy about this! Chill out, it's a simple question. I know my mom doesn't want me spending tons on her, so instead I really try to makes something or do something for her around the house. My brother makes clean the house coupons, and she LOVESSS THOSE! This year I'm putting together a book of poems for her.

This year I'm getting my mom a new pair of Reef sandals since she used to have two pairs but my dog chewed up the right shoe from one and the left from the other...so she still HAS a pair...but they're a bit odd. So I'll get her a whole pair.

I was planning to take my wife to pick out some high thread count bed sheets. Over the years, I've bought all the "standards" and thought this might be a nice change--something she/we can enjoy, that she wouldn't have bought for herself. Any thoughts? Too utilitarian? Too impersonal??

Having a little one after almost 20 years of marriage makes me look at Mother's Day with happiness no matter the gift. I will be excited to see what she come's home with from daycare today, something made from construction paper and paint. I will go the rest of my life looking forward to those hand made gifts covered in glue and fingerprints.

The only thing I want this year...and any year...is an "I love you" from my son. He suffers from cerebral palsy and it is quite difficult for him to speak at all. When he looks into my eyes and says those words, I just melt. And when he throws in a slobbery kiss and a (shaky) hug, I just know that life can't get any better!!

I have never received a bad mother's day present, but I know it can be sad when you get something that doesn't seem to be for you. My birthday is right before Christmas, so I try to help by giving some hints, but the year I got a hard drive for Christmas! Boy that was personal!

The best Mother's Day gift I ever received was from my son. In second grade his teacher had all the students write letters to the local paper about their mothers. His was published, and one of the things he said was 'She doesn't wear hats. She looks funny in them.' My friends all read it and we had a good laugh. He's 16 and he still says 'love you, mom' when I drop him off for school. That makes me feel really lucky!

Keep up the good work all of you moms, and thanks for sharing your stories!

I thought I would give the mother of my child something special for mothers day, so I went out and found a place that puts pictures on coffee mugs. I put a picture of our son and her on one of those travel muggs, so she could always see the smile on our sons face, and take it everywhere she goes.

I card and a donation to an organization I care about would be a fabulous gift. For instance, I have been wantin the gift of the adoption of a gorilla for years. Finally, last Christmas someone adopted one for me. It's a great gift and helps an endangered species at the same time.

Best: All the gifts my children make for me, (a piece of art with a hand print as a flower and a poem made by my youngest, and everything from him since, a wooden desk ornament that my middle child made for me, and a photo frame with 3 photos of my grand daughters that my daughter took and had framed.) Can't beat those.

Worst: None, they all were great. I am just happy to have them around for the day.

All you mom's out there, cherish everything your children give you. I know personally that they may not always be here. I lost one.
