the hipsters are wearing them because you can buy them in the knock off sunglass and purse stands all over the city. they've been selling them for AGES, in this context they're just ratty scarves.

actually, aside from how idiotic fox news is or how much of a fashion icon yasser arafat was, I have actually noticed this weird trend of people (mostly young hipsters - I live in Brooklyn) wearing keffiyehs - or at least tablecloth/scarves that look a lot like them - lately and I find the whole thing pretty strange.
