  2. After I went back to work after having my first baby, I bought the book Babywise because somebody recommended it to help me get my baby to sleep through the night.  I told my dad about the book and he said "how's that going to work, are you going to hit her over the head with it?"  I couldn't even get through the book, since I knew I could never do the routines in it.  Within a few weeks, my baby was sleeping through the night anyway.  My third baby didn't sleep through the night until he cut his teeth at 10 months.

My only advice to my friends who are trying to figure out what to do is to ignore the people who give you advice as if it is so simple.  They obviously don't remember what it's really like to have a baby around or they were so sleep deprived, they blocked it out.

  3. Interesting and mostly good advice...but you don't really have to let babies cry it out if it bothers you.  My almost 3 year old was never 'sleep trained' and never really slept through the night until she was 12 months.  Since then, she's been sleeping all night, a solid 12 hours without ever having endured crying it out.  Just wanted to give some hope for those who don't like the cry it out method.  ;)

  4. This is one of the only non-boring sleep things I've read in my 10 yrs of parenting (one epically bad sleeper and one just kinda crappy sleeper). I really liked the topics, the layout and the pithy, crisp prose--just right for sleep deprived, attention-deficient parents (moi!).

  5. I didn't read any sleep training books when I was pregnant, and when I read excerpts online, it mostly seemed like common sense, like the suggestion to them to sleep "drowsy but awake," except I thought that was called "oh, kid's tired, bedtime!" I think babies pick up on stress and tension, and this affects their sleep, so my number advice for new parents is: "RELAX. It'll be fine." All my friends seemed to take it as a given that sleep would be crap, and with that attitude, it's bound to be a self-fulfilling prophecy!
