Oh I can relate to everything you say. My 2 year old talks to my mom
almost every day on Skype. She's all the way across the Atlantic in
Sweden and we only get to see her a couple of times a year. I love
Skype and I could not imagine life without it. With Skype my son
remembers what his family looks like and he's not shy for long whenever
we see them. But the feeding of the food is hard and my mom frequently
says things like "oh if only I could take you out of the screen so I
could cuddle you" and it breaks my heart a little.

You are lucky that your parents care enough to do this with your children. My own parents talk a good game about wanting to be involved, but only if "involved" equals exactly no effort on their part. I wish my folks cared enough to want to Skype weekly!

Beautifully written article. Poignant and humorous at the same time. My husband is Russian, so half of my son's family lives not only halfway across the country, but halfway across the world! You very wonderfully capture the simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming sides of a long distance relationship. Bravo!

Really great article. My kids visit with grandma and grandpa every week as well and my computer monitor has smooshy lip marks all over it from the kisses. They know exactly who my parents are and when visiting their house know the room where the computer resides. Everything is familiar. On the flip side, my inlaws, like someone mentioned above, talk a good game, but the webcams have never "worked". My kids have little idea who they are and we always go through the getting reacquainted period when they visit.
I so wish we could be there and my kids could grow up with routine visits to their house like I did with my grandmother. We have to take the second best thing.

Yes, we love weekly video chats with the grandparents (we use the mac video chat) though the summer schedule has thrown the ritual off a bit. Technology pulls as apart and then connects us again, in different ways. We'll take what we can get.

It is so bitter sweet... reading the article made me think of what a huge impact my own grandparents had on my life. Much of that was family dinners and warm hugs... sneaking starbursts from the candy bowl... Grandpa carrying me out to the car while I pretend to be asleep. Will my daughter be robbed of this relationship because we choose to live far away? Will Skype ever be enough without the touch and smell of a grandmother's hug?
