feedback for "Little Boy Pink"

  1. Isn't Lindeman the pediatrician who just paid out millions in malpractice because he blogged unfeelingly and disparagingly about the death of a 12-year-old boy? He seems like a peculiar choice for an authority figure here, even if his advice is sound.

  2. I just found this site today through the blogger Fussy and was completely weirded-out to see this essay today! Because: I just wrote about a similar topic on my blog yesterday - ABOUT MY SON NAMED DECLAN. I came to similar conclusions, albeit not quite so eloquently.

So, I am very glad to have found this site! AND another kid in the world named Declan!

  3. My son's favorite color is pink, and at preschool some girls have given him crap about it being "a girl color" - interestingly, I haven't seen any boys say anything to him.  He had nail polish on the other day (because, really, who doesn't want to wear nail polish?  Honestly, it's one of the most fun things ever, to paint yourself.), and a little girl came up to him at the beach and was horrified at me allowing that.  But, whatever, he's cool with it, he's not concerned with reactions.  I love that other parents are embracing this in their boys more and more.  Who cares if it's pink and flowery or blue and truck-covered if it makes them happy?

  4. you are not alone... my four-year-old son is just at the point of moving on from his pink stage.

A stint in preschool seems to have alerted him to the gender issues at play. At the tail end of the phase, which was almost two years, my mother gave him an a) pink gun; b) pink holster; c) pink cowgirl hat, and d) a pair of hot pink cowgirl boots with light-up stars. (She defended herself saying, "Well, at least I didn't get him the little skirt!") In fact these were so extreme that even he had to admit when he put them on, "These are prettygirly!" But that did not stop him from wearing them with pride-- through the airport and through security he was really turning heads, and couldn't have been more pleased with his footwear in all the world. But shortly after that, which I now think of as the denoument of the pink stage, he abruptly changed his favorite color to red and gold.

  5. I liked the article. It's good to take such harmless things in stride and you've done a great job of illustrating that. I hope this doesn't happen with my twins though (be they girls or boys) cuz' I hate pink! lol
Although, I did tell my husband that if they absolutely must have a pink room, they can have it - once they're old enough to help me paint it.
