feedback for "Bad Love"

  1. Your story brought tears to my eyes.  What a moving piece.  And how strong you and Zev's father are to let his infatuation take its course!  I hope, if my baby daughter ever ends up in a similar situation, that I can be as wise, even in the face of the pain inevitable in watching your child's hurt.  Thank you for a wonderful piece that helps me, as a parent of a younger child, consider and make up my mind about how I want to parent when she gets older.

  2. beautifully told. our son has for the first time developed a similar obsession with a boy a year older than himself. it's amazing to me how strong the correlations are between toddler relationships and adult ones ... i never would have guessed it.

  3. Oh my goodness, you're crushing my heart!  How lucky you and your husband are to have such a lovely, sensitive boy.  I feel your pain as well- my son is 19 months old, and any disappointment for him, no matter how small, is just painful for me to watch.

  4. Wow. Poor Zev- my heart's breaking for him right now. If my little man's ever in the same situation (being the sweet, loving guy he is), I hope I'll handle it as well as you have... and resist the temptation to shake the other kid. Hard.   Oh, I wouldn't really, but it's got to be tempting.   Beautiful article.

  7. Hi Picket - I'm curious about your posting - "you are raising a child, not a ????????"                   Would you finish the sentence for me, or is this an open ended statement                   meant to stimulate the imagination?   Thanks

  10. This could just be me but this story was kind of disturbing to me. It has a bit of a homo erotic undertone. And it is very obsessive. Even the relationship with the balloons made me cringe. Well, it is probably just the style in which it was written and not the actual events.

  11. When my younger brother was four or five, an older boy whom he idolized "broke his heart" just that way. As crushed as he was, he listened intently to my mom when she told him, "Justin wasn't very nice to you today. When you're a big boy like Justin, you need to make sure you are very nice to all the younger boys who want to play with you." I don't think he ever forgot that, and both he and my other younger brother were always very kind to younger boys who wanted to play hockey or baseball with them. Needless to say, they were some of the most popular kids in the neighborhood as they grew up. These lessons are hard, and I don't look forward to seeing my kids learn them, but they're worth learning. This was a beautifully written article.

  12. Hiya - way to ruin a beautiful and touching story with your own prejudicial fears.

  13. I don't have any prejudicial fears. These were just my feelings after reading the story. I assume you are alluding to the homo erotic part. It just struck me as disturbing because it is a story about children.
