Here's my advice: just tell them you thought about freebirthing, but decided to go the safe sensible route of a midwife. The freebirthers think midwives are for wimps.

one of my favorite responses was to say..."oh so you've done a lot of reading on the subject?" then they say no and i always threw out a few titles of my favorites. Only ONE person ever picked up and read a book and that was my stepmother cause she bought it as an x-mas gift for us.

People often say "oh, you're so brave" for having a home birth.
I always retort that I think that those who give birth in the hospital are the brave ones given the infection and unnecessary intervention rates. That generally sets them back on their heels a bit.
