  2. JuliansMom: It looks like there are a lot of books on the topic of sensory disorders in children; here's what I brought up from an Amazon search: http://www.amazon.com/tag/sensory%20processing%20disorder/products.

  3. Also seek help from a pediatric occupational therapist who has experience in sensory integration and behavior management.  Your child's doctor or teacher should have resources.  OTs are the profession who typically addres sensory processing disorders.  (I am an OT who has seen a lot of children with these difficulties learn to handle their world and become a lot more happy and enjoyable to be around!)

  4. Best book: The Out of Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz   I've got a couple of "special" kids. And the best thing that ever happened was for me to slow down and figure out how to best deal with them. The mom in your story is probably overfunctioning like crazy on the weekends to keep the little "anti-christ" (ha!) happy. That's how it works.   Not to fear. The school will eventually insist loud enough that the kid will end up on meds. Which is sad. Cuz you're dead-on right about the diagnosis.

  5. The fact that two full-time professionals in the city would pay $10/hr for a regular sitter for their three kids should have told you something about what you were getting into. No surprise that they didn't take you seriously when you presented them with your perspective on the boy's behavior.
