I am curious why the author makes this statement: "When I hear employers say 'Oh, our nanny's just like a member of the family,' I smile and nod and internally call bullshit, but for me that's true." Does she really believe that, even though it is true for her, it's not for everyone else? And do I have to be best friends with my nanny to feel like she is part of the family? I adore our nanny, and I trust her much more than I trust most members of my family when it comes to taking care of my daughter, but we don't hang out and have sleepovers. Does that automatically make me a bullshitter when I say I think of her as part of my family? I guess I'm confused why the author would be so dismissive of those who claim their nanny is like family. Or is it that she has set a nearly-impossibly high bar for that family-like status between a nanny and her family?

Charming anecdotes. I agree w/ Dwtintx that it's questionable to "call bullshit" on others. Uh, I don't have sleepovers, etc. with anyone - even members of my family (except my husband - duh.) That's not what makes me feel close to people! So this is cute and lovely for the author and her employer, but I am sure many others can relate in their own way and that's good!! I have a friend, now that I think of it, who had a 3rd baby after consulting w/ their nanny - both were relieved to have a reason to continue the relationship for a few more years.

"Like family" is an interesting concept, when most people I know don't live anywhere close to their parents, and truth be told, many of them would not want gramma to babysit cuz they have "issues". I've been a mom for 16 years now. My mom and I are finally in a good place. But I confess that I am still closer to the young lady who worked for our family when I was in the thick of the young ones and needed some serious "family-style" support. Let's hear it for nannies...some of whom are more family than family. (Best part is, I had a baby two years ago the same week that my former nanny did. Guess who she calls to compare notes with? Love that!)
