feedback for "Gadget Inspector 5: Confessions of a YouTube Addict"

  1. Sam,

Just to let you know there is at least one place on the web where you can share these videos with those that really care -- family and friends -- and think that the video of your baby is the one that is interesting. The name of the site is phanfare (www.phanfare.com). Full disclosure -- I have all of the video of my 3-year-old twins on my phanfare site but I also work for the company.

  2. Sam,

Thanks for this. I have videos and photos of my Kid posted on the Web, and I'm leery, like your wife. Is this a sane decision?.... I'm still thinking.

I did have a sweet UTube video of my daughter and a friend up, until I got a really creepy, vulgar coment from some guy about it. Yuck. I took the video off.

I'm curious how other parents feel about posting pics/videos of their kids on the web.
    Please share.

  3. Lovely article. I have videos of our son online and my wife has the same concern. I think Sam's "potato salad" tagging strategy is a good solution for the cautious, but my view is that there are very very few actual pedophiles out there -- the media has wildly exagerrated the reality -- and those few should not have the effect of shutting down the sharing of human experience. If we are going to not share videos because of this fear, should we also shut down playgrounds? It's the same logic at the end of the day.

Even if you don't accept this, what danger are you really exposing your child to? If you provide a google map to your child's favorite playground that I guess there could be some conceivable danger; in the absence of that there is none. And there is safety in numbers -- with a few million baby videos out there ours isn't particularly special. Let's continue to share our videos!

  4. I'm sorry but I think the only redeeming thing about Sam's article is that he realizes just how boring and ordinary his videos are.  I just don't get everyone's need to post the minutia of their lives online.  Isn't it enough to share links to some photos of select special moments to your friends and family?  Only immediate families should be tortured with more than 5 minutes of video at a time.  And who has time to watch this stuff anyway?  What ever happened to privacy?  Does everyone really need their 15 minutes of fame used up on such ordinary pursuits?  I'm glad the subject of pedophiles was brought up too, because I definitely don't want to put images of my kid out there for any sickos to get excited over.  Yuk - keep the supply limited - not that it's really possible at this point - but do you want to add to their fodder?  And what happens when they develop tools to figure out where you're posting from?  Do you want to trust the technology that much?  Okay, I'm sounding like a huge stick in the mud so will sign off now, but I stand by my comments.  By the way, my kid is nearly 5 now, so after the first 2 or 3 years, I realized that I'm not the world's first parent, and what's fascinating to me, is much less so to others...
