feedback for "Parental Advisory: Swim Fan"

  1. we have a salt-water system in our pool. i feel much better with my children swimming in that everyday rather than a chlorine pool. its not like the ocean-just a little salty taste! we find it hard to swim in others chlorinated pools now because we can really tell a difference in how it smells, leaves our skin feeling after, etc. several pool places here in texas now will only install the salt-water systems and you have to make a "special request" if you want a chlorinated pool.

  2. I have been a Masters swimmer (which means anyone over the age of 18 training with a swim club for fitness or competitively) for 9 years and I swam 2-3 times a week for an hour all during my pregnancy last year. There were 3 other swimmers in my group that were also pregnant at the same time - two of them with twins! All 6 bambinos are now over a year old and are healthy and happy. Swimming is excellent exercise while pregnant. Being in the water feels great when you might not feel very comfortable anywhere else. I worried a bit about the chlorine, but I'm confident that the benefits to my overall health (before, during and after pregnancy) and the health of my baby outweigh any potential risk, which I'm sure is minuscule anyway. There are people who spend their entire lives in or around pools. Haven't heard of any epidemics of cancer or other illnesses among that population. Swimming (or lifeguarding) outside probably is better, except for the significant increase in your risk for skin cancer. Or of some other cancer from a nasty chemical in your sunscreen. Pick your poison.

  3. I could never swim in other peoples' pee and fecal matter even if cholrianted. I just think it is gross to get water in my mouth that some hairy guy next to me has his ass in! Ugh! I have sensitive lungs and the fumes at any public pool run me off within an hour. I never took my babies swimming either due to their porous skin. There are so many other ways to exercise and have fun. Chlorine is a dangerous chemical. MInimize the risk in your mind but it is still a chemical.

  4. Cassie - would you swim in a lake or in the ocean? Even if there was a hairy guy near nearby? No chlorine there! Guaranteed there is pee in there if there is any significant number of people, and maybe even some poop too - definitely the fish kind. OK, I'm being a little silly, a lake is not the same a a pool, but really, getting grossed out because there are other human beings sharing your water space is a bit much. I'm thinking you just aren't a swimmer. However, swimming is a valuable (potentially life-saving) skill, so I would encourage everyone to make sure their children learn it one way or another. And kids love it!

Someday when we build a pool we'll get a salt-water one too. Those are great.

Bit of trivia - all that beautiful, soft, white sand on the beaches in the Caribbean... that is parrot fish poop. I swear. Isn't nature great?
