I can relate to a lot of what you wrote, especially to being middle-class in a high-end neighborhood. I babysat for families that seemed to be in competition with one another - movin' on up...
But all I ever did was stuff my face with ice cream and watch MTV (we didn't have cable). And after the kids went to bed, I'd walk through the houses and admire the grandeur.

You aren't the only one - my vice was the Playboy Channel. Even if it was scrambled.
I wonder if the teenagers with whom I entrust my offspring look between the mattresses - because if they did they would find one big 7-inch surprise.

I can totally relate to the food thing. One of my favorite tricks during my starvation diet years as a teenager was to tell my parents I'd eat dinner at my babysitting job as a way to get out of eating at home. Then, I was free to have some sort of tiny but indulgent treat that night while babysitting for a family with more sophisticated habits than my own: one Godiva chocolate from the alluring gold box in the refrigerator. A few spoonfuls of Hagen Daz from the freezer. A handful of fancy, kettle-cooked potato chips. I could still go to bed hungry that night, as was my goal, but also with the feeling that I'd had a little taste of luxury and decadence.

I always looked for the sex stuff . . . not because I wanted to know about their sex lives (eeeeew! Grown-ups doing it!) but because I would have been mortified to ask my parents sex questions, and poring over those hidden Penthouses and copies of The Joy of Sex made me feel like I was learning useful stuff. From the latter, probably. From the former, not so much. It was all very tame--these were the days before hardcore porn was so common. Or maybe the people I sat for just weren't so pervy.

Back in my babysitting days, I just sat around and read books (that I brought with me). I did look in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom and sniff perfumes, but that's as far as it goes. My dirty little secret was that I generally didn't like kids at all. Every now and then one would be bookish and quiet and that one I liked - but the rest of them I thought were obnoxious brats.
