  2. How disappointing that your zine joins the 'just say no' mentality and does not reference the many studies that indicate that there are no ill effects from light drinking during pregnancy, e.g., http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article5051517.ece. Moreover, this statement ' Most authorities are unequivocal on the topic: "Just don't do it." ' is actually contradicted by the latter fact 'only 14 of the 81 medical textbooks reviewed had consistent recommendations not to drink.' and is distorted by your statement ' Some medical textbooks still condone light alcohol intake during pregnancy'. Please replace 'some' with 'most.
I would refer you to a more level-headed approach to this here: http://stats.org/stories/2007/what_risks_light_alco_preg_dec12_07.htm. What is interesting is that this article references a study that showed children born to women who drank lightly performed *better* on IQ tests than abstainers. Does this mean we should encourage women to drink, of course not, it means that just because we don't know does not mean we should assume that any alcohol is bad.
The point is that statements like "there are no known lower limits of safety for alcohol intake while pregnant" are meaningless...there are also no such lower limits known for nightshades like potatoes and tomatoes which also are toxic in high doses yet women are not told to 'just say no' to them.
More amusing is the statement 'many perfectly normal adults had mothers who had the occasional drink during pregnancy.' Yes, actually billions. For tens of thousands of years moderate alcohol use has been the norm for many, many cultures (and continues to be) and yet we don't live in a world filled with deformed people.
I would have expected a more thoughtful article than this from you.

  3. I posted on truuconfessions.com about how I felt guilty about drinking while pregnant (before I knew, it was not planned).  The doctor said it was okay and I had a healthy baby but the messages are definitely mixed.
